Biography

"Josiah Whittemore Jr." was born September 8, 1749, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, drowned February 14, 1800, in the harbor of Liverpool, Queens County, Nova Scotia. He was a carpenter and shipbuilder, and like his father, he sailed occasionally as captain. Apparently he lived in Massachusetts for a period of time before moving to Liverpool sometime prior to 1785. On December 22, 1771, he married Experience Sargent (Sergant) in Plymouth, Massachusetts, her first husband. She was born in Plymouth, in 1750, the daughter of William and Mary (Rider) Sargent.

  • The info. I'm adding is from the "Whittemore" section of "Our Nova Scotian Ancestors" by M. Edward Burtt, (my father) dated 4-2000. He did not list his sources for this book. Most of his research was done at the "Shelburne County Genealogical Society" Shelburne, Nova Scotia, with the help of "Eleanor Robertson Smith". He dedicated this edition to her. It read's " Eleanor Robertson Smith" of the Shelburne County Genealogical Society, who has done so much to help so many in their search for ancestral roots.
  • I consider this info to be "very" accurate having known Eleanor Smith. Dana

In "Simeon Perkins Diary" on Friday, February 14, 1800, Simeon Perkins, wrote, "Very pleasant morning. Windbreezes at S.E.& thaws considerable. Josiah Whittemore comes from Bluberry [Bay,on the north side of Liverpool Bay] with some hay in a boat, with Abel Chadsey, and breaking the ice to get to Mr. John Roberts wharf, he was striking with a hand spike, and the ice giving way perhaps easier than he expected, he fell from the bow of the boat into the hole made by the hand spike. Mr. Chadsey did not know he was overboard until Mr. Roberts called to him. He saw him at some distance from the boat & reached an oar, but he did not take hold of it. He struggled a short time & disappeared. Search was made by breaking ice, and dragging with hooks, &c, but the body is not found. An awful instance of the frailty of man and the uncertainty of life.
