John Whitten served in the United States Civil War.

John Whitten was a POW in Andersonville Prison during The United States Civil War.

John Whitten was born on 4 August 1842 in Lick Creek Township, Van Buren, Iowa, United States.[1][2]

He served with the Iowa 5th Infantry during the War Between the States. He was wounded twice and captured twice. He was held as a prisoner at both Belle Isle Prison in Richmond, Va.and Andersonville Prison in Georgia.[3][4] His brothers, Samuel and Josiah, were also veterans. Josiah did not survive imprisonment at Andersonville. John left behind a diary of his experience.[5]

He married Ellen Rice on 8 October 1872 in Van Buren County, Iowa.[6]

On 1 June 1880 he was in Keosauqua, Van Buren, Iowa. He was a County Auditor.[7]

He died (age 60) on 7 September 1902 in Farmington, Van Buren, Iowa.[8][9][10][11] He was buried in Farmington, Van Buren, Iowa. He was 60 years old.[12][13]
