Biography

We are lacking any public record of John's birth or marriage. Unsourced information on myheritage.com estimates that he was born in 1862 which seems to be an error for 1852, and gives the place of birth as Enniscorthy in Co. Wexford, Ireland. The same source has three additional children: (i) Mary Anne, married name Bird, b. 1869 d. 1938, both in Dublin; (ii) a baby girl, unnamed or name not known, born in 1875 who did not survive, and (iii) Patrick, d. 1888 and died the same year, 62 Cooke Street, Dublin.

In 1872, John and his wife Margaret lived at 14 Bass Place in Dublin. It can be assumed that John met Margaret in Dublin which was her birthplace and that he probably moved there to practice his trade.

The records for all of the confirmed children agree that John was a shoemaker.

The family seems to have moved frequently. In 1878 we find them at 32 Corn Market. In 1881, the couple lived at 32 Back Lane, Dublin, in the Merchants' Quay district of the central city just south of the Liffey, and in 1883 in Furlongs Court.

In 1885, when Robert was born, we find them close by at 26 Cook Street.

In 1887 they are at 62 Cook Street (possibly the same and correct address, with 26 a mistranscription).

In 1892 when Rosanna married we have the address 21 Cooke Street. In 1910, when Margaret married, we have the address 19 Upper Dorset Street, Dublin.

We do not find John, his wife or, with confidence, any of their surviving children other than Jane in the 1901 or the 1911 censuses.

According to information from my mother, Jane was actually brought up in Wexford which may mean in the household of John's parents or one of his other relatives.

John died in Dublin, 3 Hammond Lane, of heart disease in 1912 at the age of 59.
