John Clegg Whitworth's birth certificate shows that he was born on 21 May 1854 to Father James Whitworth, a Spinner and Mother Mary Ann Clegg, at Stainland with registration on 8 June 1854 in Halifax, Yorkshire West Riding.
By the time of the 1861 England Census on 7 April of that year when his age was given as 6 years, he was a Scholar living at 273 Town, Stainland and Old Lindley, Yorkshire, father James (32) a Woollen Scrubber and mother Mary Ann (31), and older sister Jane (8) also a Scholar, with all born in Stainland except for his mother Mary Ann who was from Hebburn Cotebrook, Lancashire.
He has yet to be found on an 1871 England Census, but on 22 August 1877 in Todmorden, Yorkshire West Riding, age 23, a Bachelor and Draper, he married Louisa [Sarah] Stockley, age 22, a Spinster, with both living at Wood Cottage, Walsden. John's father James Whitworth was a Cotton Waste Dealer, while Louisa's father James Stockley (deceased) was a Farmer, according to the marriage certificate.
Their first child Annie Jane Whitworth was born on 29 September 1877, 5 weeks after the marriage, at Walsden. John Clegg a Journey-man Picker Maker was living at 7 Montreal Place, Walsden, Todmorden, Lancashire in February 1879, where their second child, James Arthur Whitworth, was born on the 25th of that month.
The family were still living at 7 Montreal Place, on 3 April 1881 at the time of the Census. John Clegg Whitworth was now 'Head' and a Picker Maker with wife Louisa (25) b. Swaffham, Norfolk, James A Whitworth (2) and Clara Whitworth (10 mths) but no Annie Jane who was a year older than James and staying with her Grandmother Ann Clegg at 9 Back Tce, Walsden, on another Census form.
John Clegg and Louisa Whitworth had 5 more children between the time of the 1881 and 1891 England Census' by which time they had also moved to 43 Wadsworth St, Halifax, Yorkshire. He was a 36 yrs old Grocer and Beer Dealer, with wife Louisa (34), and 7 children, including Annie Jane (13) a Spinner, and James Arthur (12) Scholar, the youngest Willie (11 mths) b. Halifax, but no Clara. All the children had been born in Todmorden.
By the time of the birth of their last child Edgar Whitworth on 30 December 1898 the family had moved again, to 61 Hartley St, Halifax, with John Clegg Whitworth then a Carter, and which is where they were for the 1901 Census. This shows that John Clegg Whitworth (47) was a Driver for a Timber Merchant, with wife Louisa (45), and 8 children, of whom Annie Jane (28) a Woollen Winder, Mary Ann (19) and Molly (18) Woollen Twisters, Harry (16) a Woollen Spinner and Assistant Overlocker, Fred (13) a Barber's Apprentice - all employed workers, and the 3 youngest Willie (10), Florence (9) and Edgar (2).
The Death Certificate for John Clegg Whitworth, a Carter, has that he died on 13 May 1906 at 17 Oak Terrace, Halifax, Yorkshire, of pneumonia aged 51 yrs. The informant was Edgar Hanson and his death was registered on 14 May 1906. He was buried on 17 May 1906 at Mount Pellon (Halifax), Christ Churchyard, Yorkshire, England.
