Biography

James son of James whitworth, a wool spinner, and Grace Whitworth, resident in Stainland, was baptised on 8 February 1829 in the Parish of Halifax, Chapel of Ripponden with Rishworth, St Bartholomew, County of York. This gives an indication of his birth year, along with the majority of Census ages, marriage, and his death age of 75, as in early 1829 or late 1828.

In the 1851 England Census on 30 March the Whitworth family were resident at 120, 121, Stainland, Parish of Stainland with Old Lindley, Yorkshire, England. James (22) a slubber, b.Stainland, son of James (51) overlooker and Grace (48), with siblings William (24) spinner, Maryann (16) feeder, Joseph (16) spinner, were all woollen workers, except Elizabeth (27) a serge burler and Hannah (11) a scholar.

James Whitworth (22), Bachelor and slubber, father James an overlooker, married Mary Ann Clegg (22), Spinster, father Elijah, on 29 October 1851 in Halifax at St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England. Both the Bride and the Groom were resident at Stainland and wrote their names in the register.

In May 1854 at the time of the birth of his son John Clegg Whitworth, James was a spinner resident at Stainland, Yorkshire.

In the 1861 England Census the family was still living at Stainland but at 273 Town, with James Whitworth (32) a woollen slubber, wife Mary Ann (31), daughter Jane (8) and son John Clegg (6) scholars, all born in Stainland, Yorkshire, except for Mary Ann born Chebburn, Costerbrook, Lancashire.

After the death of his wife Mary Ann Clegg in 1865, James married again in the April quarter of 1867 with the marriage to Susannah Skelton registered in the Halifax registration district of Yorkshire West Riding. His father would pass away in the following year and his mother the next year of 1869. By the time of the 1871 England Census, James Whitworth (41) a Waste Puller, was living with wife Susannah (36) born Mt Tabor and son James H. Whitworth (2) born Halifax, at 49 Oxford Terrace, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Sadly, James Herbert Whitworth passed away aged 26 years on 11 May 1895, unmarried, having become a pattern maker, and was buried in Mount Tabor Methodist Churchyard.

An 1881 England Census has two lines of the Census form not filled in after the Head: James Whitworth (55) married, a 'Woolen Waste Puller', born Halifax, Yorkshire, resident at Mill Hill Brearly, Sowerby in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. The occupation strongly suggests this is James, although the age is out by 3 to 4 years and his birth place was Stainland, a village 6 kms south of Halifax. As will be seen from his wife Susannah's profile, she was a Visitor with Hannah Skelton on another 1881 Census form. Their son James Herbert Whitworth (12) was also on a different 1881 Census form again visiting the Crowther family of whom he was a nephew.

Ten years later in the 1891 England Census, James Whitworth (62) a Grocer, was living at 13 Fitzwilliam St, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, with his wife Susannah (59), both indicating that they were born Yorkshire, Stainland but with Mount Tabor added underneath for Susannah.

Susannah passed away in 1896 and we find James on the 1901 England Census at 261 Tonge Moor Road, Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire as a 72 years old Father-in-Law, Widower, retired Grocer, born Stainland, Yorks resident with Dickson Dewhurst (40) Insurance Agent, wife Clara (39) born Stainland, and their 6 children, who with father Dickson were all born in Lancashire. Clara was the 2nd daughter of James and his first wife Mary Ann (nee Clegg) born 2 November 1861 in Stainland^[1].

James Whitworth passed away aged 75 years with his death registered in the October quarter of 1904 in the Huddersfield registration district of Yorkshire West Riding.

Research Notes

Occupations: Slubber is worked in the textile industry, separated combined slivers into rovings (aka slubbings) for use in the spinning process. Overlooker: another textile industry term, the overlooker supervised work in a textile mill^[2]. A Waste Puller was not found in this or any other reference.
