Biography

Tom Henry Widdowson was born in 1855 in Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England to Thomas Widdowson and Sarah (Carnall) Widdowson. His birth was registered in Grantham in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Carnal.[1]

Tom Henry Widdowson, son of Thomas, a wheelwright, & Sarah, residing at Norton St, was christened on 12 Aug 1855 at St John the Evangelist in Spittlegate.[2][3][4]

In 1861 Tom H Widdowson (age 5, Scholar) lived at Norton St in Spittlegate with his father Thomas (38, Wheelwright & Carpenter), mother Sarah (34), and three siblings: Eliza M (9, Scholar), William C (7, Scholar), and John F (1), as well as grandfather John Carnall (63, Agricultural Labourer).[5][6]

In 1871 Tom Henry Widdowson (age 18 [~15], Private 7th Hussars) lived at York Calvalry Barracks in Gate Fulford, Yorkshire.[7][8]

Unable to locate Tom on the 1881 census - if he was still a soldier, perhaps he was stationed outside of the UK.

Tom Henry Widdowson married the widow Louisa Mary Ibell (nee Freeman) in 1885. The marriage was registered in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire in the second quarter of the year.[9]

Tom and Louisa had three children:

  1. Helen Louie (Widdowson) Abbott (1886-)
  2. Ernest George Widdowson (1889-1890)
  3. Hilda Annie Widdowson (1890-)
  • Tom and his wife also seem to have raised his niece, Sarah (Widdowson) Popple (1896-1980). Sarah was listed as their daughter in 1901, but in 1911 was listed as their niece. Her father was actually Tom's brother Harry Cecil Widdowson, whose wife died around the same time that Sarah was born.

In 1891 Tom Henry Widdowson (age 35, Castle Museum Attendant) lived at 1 Fadima Street in Sneinton, Nottingham with his wife Louisa (31) and two daughters: Helen Louis (4) and Hilda A (6 months).[10][11]

In 1901 Tom H Widdowson (age 45, Museum Attendant) lived at Flewitt Street in Nottingham with his wife Louisa (41) and three daughters [actually two daughters and a niece]: Helen L (14, Hosiery Machinist), Hilda A (10), and Sarah (4).[12]

In 1911 Tom Henry Widdowson (age 55, Attendant Municipal) lived in Nottingham with his wife Louisa (51), two daughters: Hilda Annie (20, Shop Assistant Drapery) and Helen Louie Abbott (24), son-in-law Harold William Abbott (28, Telegraph Clerk Railway), granddaughter Jessie Hilda Abbott (0), and niece Sarah Widdowson (14, Cutter Hosiery).[13]

Tom H Widdowson passed away on 9 Nov 1913, aged 58 years. His death was registered in Nottingham in the last quarter of the year.[14] An obituary for Tom Henry Widdowson, son of Thomas Widdowson, who died on 9 Nov 1913 aged 58 years, was published on 15 Nov 1913.[15]
