Biography

Harry Cecil Widdowson was born in 1867 in Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England to Thomas Widdowson and Sarah (Carnall) Widdowson. His birth was registered in Grantham in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Carnell.[1]

Harry Cecil Widdowson, son of Thomas, a carpenter, & Sarah, residing at Norton Street, was christened on 1 Sep 1867 at St John the Evangelist in Spittlegate.[2][3]

In 1871 Harry C Widdowson (age 3) lived at 92 Norton Street in Spittlegate with his father Thomas (48, Machinist), mother Sarah (44), and five siblings: Elizabeth M (19), William (18, Engine Fitter), John F (11, Scholar), Annie M (9, Scholar), and Ernest W (6, Scholar).[4]

In 1881 Harry Widdowson (age 13, Scholar) lived in Spittlegate with his father Thomas (58, Joiner), mother Sarah (54), and three siblings: Lizzie (29, Cook Housekeeper), John (22, Boiler Maker Rivetter), and Ernest (16, Joiner Appr).[5]

In 1891 Harry Cecil Widdowson (age 24, Engine Fitter) was a boarder in Holy Trinity and St Mary, Hull, Yorkshire in the lodging house of Mary Paulina Simpson.[6]

Harry Cecil Widdowson married the widow Sarah Smith Smith (nee Trotter) in 1891. The marriage was registered in Hull in the last quarter of the year.[7]

Harry and Sarah had four children:

  1. John William Widdowson (1893-1893)
  2. Harry Cecil Widdowson (1894-1900)
  3. Kate Elizabeth Widdowson (1894-1894)
  4. Sarah (Widdowson) Popple (1896-1980)

The death of Harry's wife Sarah Smith Widdowson was registered in the same quarter of the year as their daughter Sarah's birth - presumably she died due to complications of childbirth.

Harry's only surviving child, Sarah, seems to have been raised by his brother Tom and his wife.

In 1901 Harry C Widdowson (age 33, Engine Fitter) was a boarder at Campbell Street Ruths Terrace in Leeds, Yorkshire in the household of William Deveraux.[8] Harry's daughter Sarah (4) was listed as the child of his brother Tom H Widdowson (45, Museum Attendant) and sister-in-law Louisa (41), who lived at Flewitt Street in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.

In 1911 Harry Cecil Widdowson (age 43, Engine Fitter Engineers Works) was a boarder in Grantham in the household of Thomas Henry Cowlam.[9] Harry's daughter Sarah (14, Cutter Hosiery) was still living with his brother Tom in Nottingham, but her relationship to head of household accurately reflected that she was his niece.
