Sam was born on 11 October 1907 at 223 Oldham Rd, Waterloo, Lancashire, the son of George Wild, a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, and Sarah Jane Wild formerly Sprawson. The informant of his birth was mother Sarah Jane Wild, of the same address. [1]
Sam had four siblings named Florence Beatrice born 1910, George born 1913, Spencer born 1914 and Ronald born 1926.
In the 1911 census mother Sarah, Sam and sister Florence were living with Sarah's mother and stepfather at 223 Oldham Rd, Waterloo. Stepfather John McGarry, aged 55, was a bricklayer's labourer. Mother Jamima [sic] was aged 50. Their daughter Beatrice McGarry, aged 24, was a cotton cloth weaver. Mother Sarah Jane, aged 28, was a lozenge maker. Sam was aged 3 and Florence Beatrice aged 6 months. [2]
Father George Wild was then staying at the Bowerham Barracks, Lancaster, Lancashire. This was the depot of The Kings Own (Royal Lancashire) Regiment. Recorded as single, George was a Drummer aged 27. [3]
The family has not been located in the 1921 census.
Sam Wild married Edith Ivy Calvert on 7 September 1934 at the Methodist Chapel, Millgate, Hollins, Oldham, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded Sam was a bachelor aged 26 and an insurance agent. His father was named as George Wild, a foreman gardener. Edith was a spinster aged 19 and a domestic servant. Her father was named as Levi Calvert (deceased). At the time of their marriage Sam was residing at 7 Houghton Ave, Oldham and Edith at 1 Manor Rd, Oldham. Their witnesses were James Dean and Hazel M Calvert, Edith's sister. [4]
Of interest Sam's parents George and Sarah J Wild were still residing at 7 Houghton Ave, Oldham in the 1939 Register.
This couple had three children.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Edith was living at 690 Oldham Road, Limehurst Rural District, Lancashire. Edith I, born 10 October 1914, was aged 25. The record for their child remains closed at this time [2020]. Also living with her was brother Arnold V Calvert. Born 22 May 1903, he was aged 36. Arnold was employed as an omnibus driver. [5]
Sam Wild died in 1969 aged 62 years. His date of birth was recorded as 11 October 1907. [6]
Edith Ivy Wild died in 1970 aged 55 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 10 October 1914.[7]
