Biography

William Dewitt Wilkins was born August 20, 1877 to Emma and Asbury Wilkins[1].

At age 21 he was a farm laborer living with his parents and siblings.[2]

He married Mayfield Edmonson and had three children: Roy Ottoway, Armeda Elizabeth, and Earl W Wilkins. Mayfield died in 1905 and William remarried to Nellie Gilliam.

He served in WWI. On April 30, 1919 he departed Marseille, France on the ship, GUISEPPE VERDI for New York. His rank was Private; his military unit was: BTRY F 307 F.A. Notes: BATTERY F 307TH FIELD ARTILLERY. His place of residence was Taylorville, IL. His mother: Emma Wilkins.[3] His draft registration card read - minister of the gospel; Nellie Gilliam Wilkins, relative.


At 64 years of age, he filled out a WWII draft registration form: 1012 North 23rd st. St. Louis, MO; Birth date as above; Nellie Wilkins listed as the person who will always know his address; He lists himself as a Minister with Wayman's Temple, 23rd and Cole St., St. Louis, MO[4]

Rev. Wilkins passed away in 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri having been the minister at Saint Matthews A.M.E church.[5] He was 73 years old.
