Norman was born in 1927 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He worked many jobs throughout his lifetime, including at a knitting mill, a milk man, a gas station attendant, and a roofer. (Not necessarily in that order). I do know that the roofing job was the last one he had and was probably the longest one.
He loved to bowl. One of his best friends was Mr. Herb Reese.
When he was younger, he loved riding motorcycles. In fact, he and his brothers were some of the founding members of the Red Devils of Canada. My mom told a story about how they had missed riding with the club one day because of a wedding my mom wanted my dad to take her to. On that ride that day, a taxi driver drifted over into the oncoming lane and killed my dad's best friend who was riding point. This upset my dad so much that my mom said his hair fell out.
Even though he only had a 7th grade education, he was always willing to try to help me with my homework even when it was way above his head.
In November 1987, he started complaining of feeling sick to his stomach and having abdominal pains. He went to the hospital and doctor several times and they kept telling him that it was just a stomach virus. Finally in January 1988, he was diagnosed with cancer. By the time they found it, it was basically throughout his entire body. He made an attempt at chemo, but that really didn't help much except to make him sicker. We took him home and had home hospice for him. He died at home on April 10, 1988.
