Jane Williams was the daughter of George Williams and Sarah Cavernder. An exact date of birth for Jane is not known at this time. However, her older brother James D. Williams was born Jan. 16, 1808. It is believed that Jane was born about 1810. The George Williams family lived in Pickaway County, Ohio until 1818 when the family moved to Vincennes, Indiana."When James D. Williams became Governor, he was fond of telling how, at the age of ten, he had made the trip from Ohio on horseback, fording the shallow streams and swimming his horse across the deeper ones. From his account we may infer that the Williams family, then consisting of father, mother, two daughters and four sons, brought their goods on pack-horses over the trail from Cincinnati to Vincennes." (Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. XXII, June 1926, No. 2, page 102-103) The Williams children attended a log school house when they could get time off from the daily work of the farm. They were extremely poor. Keeping the family in homespun clothing was a full time job and shoes were worn in the winter only. During the summer months the entire family went barefoot. Jane and her sister Ruth wore their shoes for Sunday only.Their home was small and poorly furnished. The family raised all of their food which consisted of mostly corn and the vegetables raised in the garden. They managed to raise a little cotton to provide clothing. Most of the meat was provided by means of hunting. James tells that the first sieve owned by the family in Indiana was made by stretching a piece of deerskin over a wooden hoop. Holes were then punched into the skin with the spindle from the spinning wheel. The tools the family had were of the rudest sort, consisting of the ax, hoe, a wooden plow, wooden pitchforks and a wooden harrow. In 1823 the Williams family moved to a farm in Harrison Township, Knox, Indiana. In 1828 the father George died leaving his wife with 6 children to raise. James, being the oldest, took charge, managed the farm, and supported the family. Jane Williams married Josiah Carrico about 1827-28. Their first child was born in 1829 at Sullivan County, Indiana. The Carrico's moved to Missouri sometime before 1846. Their 7th child, Martha Ann was born in Ozark County, Missouri 14 Aug. 1846. Josiah was a preacher in the M.E. Methodist Church and a farmer. During the Civil War the family moved to Rolla, Missouri for safety. Josiah and Jane were known to be Union sympathizers. Three of Jane's sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War. John R. and Isaac Owen appear to have been killed. Josephus survived and died in Howell County in 1908. After the war the family moved back to Pottersville where Josiah died in 1873. Jane is buried in the cemetery at Pottersville, Howell, Missouri.
