Biography

Cassandra Elizabeth Williams was born in Campbell, Virginia about 1832. She is first on record in the 1850 census of Campbell County in the home of her father Lewis E. Williams.

The 1850 an 1860 censuses combine to show 8 siblings for Cassandra(list under father's profile), but father Lewis had two wives. Lewis had married Ann Coleman in 1827 in Campbell County. When Ann died(date to be discovered), Lewis remarried to Ann's sister Matilda T. Coleman. The marriage record for Cassandra's sister Virginia, who was born about 1843, lists Matilda as her mother, so Ann Coleman died prior to 1842.

Cassandra married William Henry DePriest on October 30, 1850, and the 1860 census would show 5 of the couples 7 children. The two others appear in the 1870 census. Full list:

  1. Maria DePriest 1853
  2. Robert W. 1855
  3. Matilda T. 1857
  4. Martha 1859
  5. Lewis 1860
  6. Cornelia W. 1862
  7. Virginia 1864

Six men in Cassandra's life would join the CSA in the Civil War, and all would be in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. Husband William, and his brother Turpin DePriest, as well as four of Cassandra's brothers: Fayette, John, Lewis, and Nathaniel. Sadly, husband William would be killed in action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 8, 1864. The other men lived through the conflict.

The June 18, 1880 census of Rustburg, Campbell, Virginia shows Cassandra(Bettie) DePriest with children Lewis, Cornelia, and Virginia. Lewis is noted as head of house, and "Lou" Williams is also in the home listed as his aunt, and as born about 1850. None of Cassandra's sister fit that year; closest would be Ann M. Williams, est 1854. She did have a sister Louisa, but she was born about 1838.

A man who served with Cassandra's husband In Company I, ROBERT BAILEY YOUNGER, is shown on the same page in the 1880 record.

The FamilySearch version of Cassandra's profile shows death in Campbell County, Virginia in September of 1880. This is not sourced, but the rest of the family is extensively on that site.
