Biography

Jesse Williams was born in Falls Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, the son of Phoebe Ann (Martin) and Elijah Williams. [1] In 1850, Jesse worked as a potter and lived with the family of Elias Search, a potter.[2] He continued with his career at least through 1860.

Jesse married Susan Jane Redman on 30 November 1854 in Muskingum County, Ohio.[3] In 1860, they were living in Hopewell Township.[4] They had five children: Armenius "Mina", Salathial, Margaret, Joseph, and Jesemine May "Jessie" Williams.

Jesse Williams of Hopewell Township, Ohio, registered for the Civil War draft 1 July 1863. [5] He enlisted as a private in Company B, Ohio 135th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) on 08 May 1864. [6] It was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered in May 11, 1864. They had actions at Maryland Heights July 3-7 and mustered out September 1, 1864. [7]

Jesse was captured at North Mountain, West Virginia, on his first day in action. [8][9] He was imprisoned in the notorious Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter), Georgia, which was in operation from February 1864 until May 1865. [10][11]

Jesse Williams is believed to have died of starvation at Andersonville prison on 21 March 1865. [12]

The Andersonville National Cemetery is the final resting place for the Union prisoners who died while being held as POWs. The prisoners' burial ground at Camp Sumter has been made a national cemetery. It contains 13,714 graves, of which 921 are marked "unknown". [13]
