Dr. Nicholas Williamson, M.D. (1845-1902) was a graduate of an advanced medical course in the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland, a stockholder and director in the New Brunswick Savings Institution, and connected with the Middlesex County Medical Society and the New Jersey State Medical Society. His political career began in 1882 when he was elected to represent the fifth ward in the city council, an office that he continued to hold until 1886. He was elected Mayor of New Brunswick in 1895, and was re-elected for two successive terms. According to the book "History of the New Jersey Coast" by Peter Ross and Fenwick Y. Hedley, published in 1902, "the city has never had a more capable officer, for while his course has been progressive, his administration has been practical and free from extravagant expenditures" and "while a staunch Republican, has never been biased in his official acts by his party allegiance"
