Stanley Dean Willis was born in 1893 in Millthorpe, New South Wales (Australia). He was the sixth son of Mark Willis and Emma Dean. [1] When he was old enough, he worked on his father's farm.
He embarked with reinforcements for the 21st Infantry Battalion on 3rd November 1916 in Sydney aboard HMAT Afric A19. [4] Once deployed to the 'killing fields' of the Western Front, in France and Belgium, he was allocated to C Company, 17th Infantry Battalion. [2] He attained the junior non-commissioned rank of Corporal.
He was killed in action during an advance about five o'clock in the evening of 9th August 1918 at Framvillers when a bullet hit him in the head. His death was said by a witness to be instantaneous. [5]His remains are buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. [6] Stanley Dean Willis's name is located at panel 84 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra [7] [8] and on the Cenotaph at Millthorpe. [9]
Following the war his family was issued both his British War Medal and Victory Medal.
