Biography

Stanley Willis was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Stanley Dean Willis was born in 1893 in Millthorpe, New South Wales (Australia). He was the sixth son of Mark Willis and Emma Dean. [1] When he was old enough, he worked on his father's farm.

On 2nd August 1916, Stanley enlisted in the Australian Imperial force, his young nation's all-volunteer expeditionary force for the (First World) War.[2][3]

He embarked with reinforcements for the 21st Infantry Battalion on 3rd November 1916 in Sydney aboard HMAT Afric A19. [4] Once deployed to the 'killing fields' of the Western Front, in France and Belgium, he was allocated to C Company, 17th Infantry Battalion. [2] He attained the junior non-commissioned rank of Corporal.

Roll of Honor
Corporal Stanley Willis was killed in action at Framvillers, Somme, France during The Great War.
He was killed in action during an advance about five o'clock in the evening of 9th August 1918 at Framvillers when a bullet hit him in the head. His death was said by a witness to be instantaneous. [5]

His remains are buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. [6] Stanley Dean Willis's name is located at panel 84 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra [7] [8] and on the Cenotaph at Millthorpe. [9]

Following the war his family was issued both his British War Medal and Victory Medal.
