Samuel Willson Sr. was the son of James Willson and Lucretia Freeman , born and died in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. He engaged in farming and saw mill operations, which he built in 1805 on the southern portion of his property. Although, he was not actually a doctor, he worked tirelessly in the treatment of sores and cancers due to training he had received from his family members. He was often called Dr. Willson, the cancer doctor. His house soon became a mecca for those ailing from the disease. He practiced the "Thompsonian System" and became a prefered doctor to many. The family homestead, in Quakertown, New Jersey, was quitclaimed to Samuel in 1813 by his brother John. It had apparently been under joint ownership until then.
Samuel married Hannah Mason in 1806, the daughter of John Mason of Prince Edward, Virginia, and Ura Doyle of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Hannah became crippled from a fall and was and unable to walk for years prior to her death. Both were members of the Society of Friends at Quakertown and buried in appropriately marked graves there. They were parents of seven children. (Willson 47)
