James was born about 1766, probably somewhere in Fife. He was a seaman and lived in Easter Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. He married Jean Robertson in Edinburgh on 21 March 1791 and they had eight children. Why they were married in Edinburgh and not in Aberdour, where they both lived, is not known for certain, but their son did exactly the same thing and it was probably due to the wish to be married in a particular type of church. James died in Easter Aberdour on 28 April 1849 and was interred in the New Church Yard on 1 May, aged 82 years.
