Edward was born in 1908. His father ran a grocery business in Belfast and Edward helped his father behind the counter. His experience in the food trade led him to join the NAAFI (Navy Army and Air Force Institutes) during the war to provide catering facilities to the troops. It was in Dundee during the war that he met his wife Mary Ann Lyall. They were married in September 1944. After the war the family moved briefly to Glasgow but eventually settled at 81 Grove Street, Edinburgh where Edward was employed as a catering manager with Martin's bakery. He ran their restaurants in the city and provided refreshment facilities at functions. After he left Martin's bakery he worked for J.W. Greig as a travelling salesman and finally as a driver with the Army Department based at their Scottish HQ at Craigiehall, near Edinburgh.
