Biography

Charley and his parents migrated from Missouri to Oklahoma in 1910, or perhaps sooner. Note he married Nancy Wood in 1910.

Email from Jeanne C. Shirley Mon. 23 June 2003: "I think that Charley and James and Mary Frances Wilson came to OK Territory after Wm Melton 'Loke" and Maud and their family. The story I heard was Uncle Mel( George Melvin) Brooks wrote to Maud and Loke and encouraged them to come down. Later Loke wrote to his brother the same. Mel came in time for the drawing in 1901, Maud and Loke probably about 1904-- I can not verify this except by birthdates and recollections of the eldst son, Garnet. So Charley and his folks would have been later by 2 or 3 years. when I corresponded with two of Charley and Nannie's children they did not know and I have reason to believe Charley's obit was incorrect in that respect. Good luck on your search and I will let you know when I find anything else. Jeanne

Charlie Wilson told his grandson, Christopher C. Carson this item: Chris said Grandpa Charlie once said, " Jesse was mean." Also that Jesse had killed one of the Wilson's that rode with him. Grandpa Charlie told Chris that his (Charlie's) dad, James, told him that when he (Charlie) was a boy in Missouri. Charlie didn't know if the Wilson who was killed, was a family member or not. There is no information as to a Wilson who rode with Jesse in the " James Gang". That doesn't mean a lot. I am sure that all of the members of the outlaw bunch were never known.

Researcher Jeanne Shirley reported Charley was living in St, Joseph's nursing home in Lawton as early as 1975. She said his niece, Francis (Wilson) Rogers visited him during his 100th year and mentioned that because of diabetes, he had lost a leg.

Gary visited him just prior to going overseas for the Air force in summer of 1977. Diabetes might have been only contributory. Charley stated that a nurse ran over his foot with a gurney. The wound progressed to requiring amputation.
