He had purchased a farm in Montgomery County, Kentucky on Aaron's Run prior to 1810. Three of his sons (Ptolemy, Thomas C., and Henry H.) are known to have been born in Virginia. Two would have been under 10 years old in the 1810 census with the youngest of the group born 1808. Thus he came to Kentucky between 1808 and 1810. Since there are at least five John Wilsons in the county at that time designating between them is difficult.

P 380 John Wilson: 1 male under 10; 1 male 26-45; 1 female 16-26; 1 female 45 & over
Based on the known family of John Wilson he would probably be the John on page 377 because he has two males under 10 in the household who we can identify from later records as Thomas C. (born about 1805) and Henry H. (born 1808) as well as a male 10-16 who would be Ptolemy (born 1803). There were also two young under 10 females in the household whose names we learn from later records are Eliza and Louisa. The 1810 census also tells us John's approximate age. He was born between 1765-1784.
