The son of Calvin Wingate and Pauline (Winchell) Wingate, Prentice Wingate was born in Washington County, Texas[citation needed] in 1879. In 1900, he lived with his mother in Justice Precinct 1 of Austin County, Texas, farming.[1] In 1910, residing in San Saba County, Texas, John worked for the railroad as a contractor.[2] In 1912, he was convicted on a charge of assault with a firearm, with intent to rob, and was sentenced to a prison term of ten years, to begin on April 9, 1913 and to end on November 27, 1922. However, he was pardoned on July 1, 1914.[3]
Prentice registered for the World War I draft when he was 39, registering in Houston, Texas on September 12, 1918.[4] He stated that he lived at 1410 Commerce Avenue in Houston and that he worked for Horton & Horton as a carpenter. Prentice was described as a slender man, of medium height, with black hair and brown eyes. He did not enlist and, in 1920, lived in Waller County, Texas, working as a house carpenter, in a household that included his mother and his brother, James.[5]
Prentice married Belle Kelley (1885-), marrying sometime before 1928, residing with Belle, her children, and her mother in Galveston, Texas, where he worked as a screwman at a cotton mill.[6]
Prentice Wingate died of tuberculosis, passing away in Galveston, Texas[7] at the age of 51[8] and is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.[9][10]
