Biography

His father was Sir Anthony Wingfield KG (ca. 1488-1552), vice-chamberlain to Henry VIII, and his mother (married by 1520), Elizabeth or Ursula Vere, daughter of George Vere,^[1] and sister to two brothers who were Members of Parliament.

Sir Robert of Letheringham married twice:

1. Cecily (or Cicely, Cicylle) Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Baron Wentworth, MP for Suffolk, and
2. Bridget Spring of Lavenham, daughter of Sir John Spring of Lavenham, Suffolk, Esquire of Hitcham (d. 1547) and widow of Sir Thomas Fleetwood (ca. 1517-1570, MP for Preston and Buckinghamshire).^[2][3]

Visitations of Norfolk, Rye (1891), describes Sir Robert's 2nd wife as Ann, daughter of William Spring, but this is undocumented, and in the version cited by Wikipedia,^[3] no daughter Ann of John Spring is named, but Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Kitson is shown as having married Bridget's brother, Sir William Spring of Pakenham (d. 1599).^[1]

One of Sir Robert's sons by Cecily was Sir Anthony Wingfield I, (ca. 1554-1605) MP for Orford, Dunwich, and Suffolk successively. Both father and son were before Gray's Inn.^[4]

He was knighted in 1553, Member of Parliament for Suffolk (1563, 1572) and Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk (1560-1).^[5]

Deceased 19 Mar 1596.^[6][5] ‘Sir Roberte Wingfeilde’ of Letheringham, will dated 5 Jun 1584, proved 28 Jun 1596 PCC (PROB 11/87). ^[7]
