Biography

Bernard was born in 1866 in Sussex, England. By 1901 he had his own household in Plymouth, Devon with his wife Lauretta and his daughter Ruth. He died on 3 Sep 1934 in the Plymouth area. His obituary from The Western Morning News reads, in part: At Plymstock Church on Wednesday the funeral took place of Mr. Bernard Alfred Wingfield, The Haven, Plymstock, who died suddenly on Monday following an operation. Prior to retiring to Plymstock in 1927 Mr. Wingfield was for 33 years mate-in-charge of the Customs and Excise launch at Plymouth.

Research Notes

Birth date comes from the UK Railway Employment Records, birth place from the 1901 census. Looking at the image of the UK Employment Records on Ancestry, he was listed as a deckhand at the time (1889), and according to his obituary he was the mate-in-charge of the Customs and Excise launch in Plymouth. So, it seems he was a government employee for his entire career.
