Biography

Ansel was born Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts in 1787. He left Rochester around the age of 18 years and went to Boston where he lived 2 years. Then he went to Whittingham, Vermont, where he met Lucinda Tainter. She was the daughter of Deacon Jonathan Tainter and his wife Jemima (Root). Her grandparents, Benjamin Tainter and his wife Hannah Wood, came to America in the Confidence in 1638. In 1802, Ansel married Lucinda Tainter on May 22, at Whitingham, Windham, Vermont.

In 1810 Ansel and Lucinda moved to Le Ray, New York with several other families. Ansel served in the War of 1812 with the New York Militia, first as a private then as a Sergeant. He was a sergeant under Capt. Rufus Barr, Col. Calvin Britain, Regiment 108. He was a soldier in defense of Sacketts Harbor. In 1817 he was appointed a Lieutenant in the 108th regiment of Infantry. In 1818 he was made a captain and a major in 1819 of the same regiment.

In 1838-1843 Ansel was a constable and collector of the town (?Le Ray). In 1847-48 Ansel was a duty sheriff. According to his son Almerin, he was a man of great activity and vital force, but of very delicate physical organization, who overtaxed his strength in his younger days. Because of this he spend his last 35 years in broken health. He was very social and pleasing in his intercourse with the world. He was most kind and affectionate in his family relations. He was not of especially pious character but he was very conscientious, honorable and charitable.

In the 1850 census, they are living in Le Ray, New York. Ansel is 62 and a constable. Almeria is 19 and a clerk. Lucinda is 60. She and Ansel were born in Massachusetts and Almeria in New York.

In 1855, Ansel and Lucinda moved to Millburg, Michigan.

In 1860 Census Ansel was 73 years old and Lucinda was 70. She was born in Connecticut and he in Massachusetts. He was a farmer. Ansel Winslow Jr. and his family are listed above them in the census. Ansel with his son Almeria are the ones to lead the family out of New England to Michigan.

In 1865, Ansel went to live with his son, Almerin-Henry in Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of the Baptist church for many years.

By 1870, he is living in Chicago aged 83 living with his son, Almeria age 39 and his wife Matilda age 33, both born in New York, and their son William H age 3 born in Illinois.

He died on Aug 22/3,1870 at the home of his son, Almerin-Henry in Chicago, Illinois and is buried Saint Joseph City Cemetery, Berrien County, MI, beside his wife Lucinda. They were married 57 years.
