OBITUARY. Our local correspondent writes: —On Sunday afternoon the remains of the late Mr Thomas Witherden were interred in the Waterloo Cemetery. The deceased was a very old resident of this place, having arrived here in March, 1857, shortly after the rush broke out in the gully now known as Tipperary. A short time after this he met with an accident, falling down the shaft where he was working, a distance of over 60 feet, and the windlass falling after him. From this accident the seeds of the disorder, which eventually carried him off had their first formation. Of late years he had suffered much from the complaint which was, I understand, a species of dropsy. During the last week or 10 days he had suffered, from the prevailing epidemic, but on Thursday afternoon he appeared better than he had been for some time. This did not last long, for on Friday he was seized by his old enemy, and from about 2 o'clock in the afternoon until 8 the same evening he lay struggling for breath; then he succumbed to the conqueror of all, King Death. The funeral procession, which started from his residence, the Albion hotel, of which he had been land-lord, was well attended. After the vehicle containing the corspe, there came, of course, the mourners, then followed 24 vehicles of all sorts, and containing friends and neighbors, then there marched the men of the New Victoria claim, where he was a shareholder, then the other miners; the whole numbering, well on to 200 men. The bearers were Messrs R. Wm., and W. Frusher, representing the old inhabitants of the place; Mr. Jas. Frusher, representing the New Victoria tributors, Mr R. Hewitt (President M.A.), and Messrs R. H. Dodds, J. Gibbons, and W. Collins, the Miners' Association, of which the deceased had been an honorary member. On the coffin was the simple inscription of the name and age of the deceased, 56 years. Mr J. Prentice officiated at the grave, and addressed to those present a few telling sentences, as to the necessity of being prepared to die, and also with regard to condolence to the bereaved family. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr Baker, of Beaufort. During, the time I was in the cemetery, I was pointed out a roughly made wooden cross, which my informant, who was an old resident, said it had been there for 28 years, and it was erected over the body of a woman who had been buried there before any cemetery had been thought of.
