Biography

Joseph H. Wood was born on 8 January 1789 in Morristown, Morris, New Jersey. His parents were Joseph and Joanna (Tuttle) Wood. Joseph is identified as the son of Joseph Wood and Joanna Tuttle in Joanna's 1837 pension application. His name and birth date in that document are the same as on his headstone. Joseph's middle initial, which is on all his records, may have stood for "Halsey", which was his paternal grandmother's maiden name.

Joseph married Ann Lane about 1824, probably in New York, based on their first known child Peter being born in 1825 in New York City. No marriage record has been located. They were each in their thirties in 1824, which is late for a first marriage, but no other marriages have been found for them.

The 1830 census shows Joseph and Ann with two sons and a daughter, all under five. [2] The 1840 census shows the same children, so it is likely that no other surviving children were born to them.[3]

  1. Peter, (1825-1898) [4], died single
  2. Maria Louisa, (1828-1911), married Daniel Terhune
  3. William L, (1830-1896) [5], died single

The 1850 Census shows son William, daughter Maria, and Maria's husband Daniel Terhune in the household. It also records that Joseph's wife Ann (Lane) was born in Connecticut. [6]

Joseph's occupation on the 1850 census is listed as shoemaker. The 1848-1850 years are when his son-in-law Daniel Terhune began making shoes. Daniel's father was a farmer, so it may be that Joseph introduced this line of Terhunes to the shoe business. In any event, he likely partnered the shoe manufacturing enterprise with Daniel.

In 1870 Joseph, widower, is living in Newark in the house of his son-in-law Daniel Terhune. [7]

Joseph died on 21 September 1875, in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, and is buried there. He shares a headstone with his wife and several children who died young. Find A Grave: Memorial #155544159
