Biography

Jabez Samuel Woodhams was baptised in Lewisham, St Mary on 23 November 1834, he was the son of Stephen Woodhams and Mary Hart ^[1]

In April 1848, at the age of 14, he was apprenticed into the Merchant Navy. His indenture showed that he was assigned to J Reay of South Shields, on board the Undaunted, based in Newcastle for a period of 6 years. A small note in the margins states 'deserted 8.48', so he remained an apprentice for just 4 months. ^[2]

There is no further trace of Jabez in any records in England.
