Thomas was born in 1894. He was the son of Banks Woods and Mary Taylor. Thomas arrived in Australia in 1915 and worked as a fitter at the Bengal Steel works in Sydney.
He was initially rejected as unfit for war service, at a height of 5ft 2inches, but later signed up on 7 June 1916 in Australia. He had a medium complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. His address at the time of signing up was 15 Taylor St, Darlinghurst, Sydney. He was injured in France and spent some time in the war hospital in Colchester. He was demobilised on 4 April 1918 and returned to Australia via Kashmir. He arrived back in Australia on 23 April 1918. He was awarded the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.
Thomas, engineer, married Ruth Graham Greenlaw Jones, a machinist, on 26 June 1920 in Surry Hills, New South Wales. They lived at 14 Claremont St, Hurstville.
They had two children, Norma Patricia (Woods) Lemsing in 1921 and Douglas Samuel in 1924.
Thomas died in 1969 and his wife one year later. He is buried in Woronora Cemetery in Sydney.
