Biography

Ella was born on 17 Feb 1869 in Cuero, DeWitt. Texas. Her parents were John Clair Woodworth and Valerie Ann North.

The 1870 Census shows John Clair 27, a merchant's agent and wife Annie 22 with their daughter Ella 1. They are living in Precinct 2, DeWitt, Texas. [1]

The 1880 Census shows John Clair 37, a dry goods merchant, wife Valerie Ann 31 with children Ella 10; Mary 8; Leona 6; Cornelia 4; and Edith 1. They are living on Court House Street, Cuero, Dewitt, Texas. [2]

On 21 May 1889, she married James Goree Ashford in DeWitt, Texas. [3]

The 1900 Census shows James Goree 41, merchant, and wife Ella C. 30 and a student with children James 9; Mary 8; and Ella C. 2. They are living in Huntsville, Texas. [4]

The 1910 Census shows James G. 50, wife Ella 40, children Goree 20; Mary 18; Claire 12; and Nan 8. James G. is a merchant and owns the furniture Store. John Sandel 30 is a servant. [5]

The 1920 Census shows James G. at 62, wife Ella Claire 51, daughters Claire 21; and Nan 19. James still owns the Furniture Store and still a merchant. Jim Bowden 30 is a servant. They are living on Ave K. in Huntsville, Texas. [6]

She passed away on 20 Nov 1923 in Huntsville.

There was an obituary in the Houston Chronicle, 22 Nov 1923 which said: "Prominent Woman dies at Huntsville. Huntsville, Texas, 21 Nov- Mrs. J. G. Ashford, prominent in club, church, civic and social circles died at the family resident here last night.

She is survived by her husband J.G. Ashford; one son J. G. Ashford Jr. of Huntsville, three daughters, Mrs. A.M. Barton of Palestine, Mrs. John Manning of Livingston, Miss Clara Ashford of Huntsville, her father Colonel J. C. Woodworth of Cuero, four sisters Mesdames J. C. Howerton, Edith Dent, Robert Klease. Cuero: Mamie Woodworth Cash and one brother Commander Edwin Booth U.S. Naval training station in San Diego, Cal.

Mrs. Ashford's death was unexpected as she recently had returned from a Galveston hospital and was apparently on the road to recovery. She spent the summer in California for her health."

She is buried with her husband in Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville. [7]
