John, the son of Thomas Wride and Catherine, née Anderson, who had been married at Fangfoss on 22 November 1766,[1] was born at Barmby on the Moor on 8 May 1779 and baptized at the parish church of St Catherine at Barmby on the Moor on 16 May 1779.[2]

John and Mary had eleven children:

Anderson, born at Barmby on the Moor on 18 December 1828 and baptized at the parish church of St Catherine at Barmby on the Moor on 22 March 1829. John's occupation was given as Farmer.[14]
Wife's Death and Burial
John's wife Mary died, aged 47, at Barmby on the Moor in October 1831 and was buried at the parish church of St Catherine at Barmby on the Moor on 11 October 1831.[15]
Emigration Attempt
In April 1832 John, with six of his children, embarked on the ship EXPERIMENT at Hull to emigrate to Quebec, Canada. Unfortunately, the ship was caught in a severe gale in the English Channel and blown onto rocks near Calais, where the ship was lost. However, all the 45 emigrant passengers and crew were saved. They were transferred to London, and from there returned home.[16] See Loss of EXPERIMENT for more detail.
Second Marriage
John married Mary Camidge by licence of the Vicar Surrogate granted on 25 July 1833. John's age was listed as 50 on the licence.[17] The marriage took place at the parish church of St Peter at Leeds on the same day. John's occupation was given as Husbandman. Witnesses were Elizabeth Richardson and Francis Whitaker.[18]
Census Record
The 6 June 1841 census records John living at Barmby on the Moor with his wife Mary and children Elizabeth and Anderson. John's age was given as 60 and his occupation as Farmer.[19]
Death and Burial
John died aged 69 at Barmby on the Moor in August 1849[20] and was buried at the parish church of St Catherine on 22 August 1849.[21]
Research Notes
Baptism Record Pedigree
John's baptism record[2] lists his pedigree as follows:
Father: Thomas Wride of Barmby Moor Son of William Wride of Barmby Moor Labourer by Catherine his Wife Daughter of William Newton of Thornton Farmer.
Mother: Catherine Daughter of Michael Anderson of Buttercrambe Farmer by Alice his Wife Daughter of Michael Geldarf of Leavening Farmer
Daughter Hannah's Baptism Record Pedigree
John's daughter Hannah's baptism record[4] has some pedigree information as follows:
Father: John Wride Labourer
Mother: Mary Daughter of William Watson
Son Anderson's Exact Birth Date
The exact date of birth of John's son Anderson was taken from his death certificate. Anderson died on 30 Jul 1905 at Ada Township, Kent County, Michigan, USA.[22]
Wives (or Wife)
Death and Burial
There are two good candidates for Mary Wride buried at Barmby on the Moor. These are:
Mary, buried at Barmby on the Moor on 11 October 1831, aged 47.[23] This gives a calculated birth year of 1784.
Mary, a widow, buried at Barmby on the Moor on 10 January 1858, aged 76.[24] The corresponding civil death registration[25] has the same age. These give a calculated birth year of 1781 for Mary.
My initial assumption was that John had a single wife Mary Watson who died in 1858. However, upon discovering the emigration attempt in 1832, where no mention was made of John's wife, it was tempting to assume that the emigration came about because Mary had died six months earlier. However, this latter would require John to have remarried to another Mary, between 1832 and 1841. The only candidate for a Yorkshire wedding occurred at Leeds, by licence, on 25 June 1833, when a John Wride married Mary Cammidge.[17] The licence gives the ages of John and Mary as 50 and 40 respectively.
Birth and Baptism
The burial record for 1831 suggests a birth year of 1784. Similarly, the 1851 census suggests a birth year of 1784, while the 1858 burial record suggests a birth year of 1781. These are all consistent with Mary being slightly younger than John, and being of marriageable age in 1805.
The baptism record for John's daughter Hannah[4] clearly states that Mary was the daughter of William Watson.
The 1851 census record states that Mary was born at York.[26]
Searching for baptisms within 10 miles of York from 1779 to 1789 with father William yields only three results:
Mary, daughter of William Watson and his wife Susanna, née Surr, baptized at York on 21 April 1779.[27]
Mary, daughter of William Watson and his wife Elizabeth, née Sproxton, baptized at Barmby on the Moor on 26 September 1784.[28]
Mary, eldest daughter of William Watson of Shipton and his wife Mary, née Sharp, baptized at Overton on 15 April 1784.[29]
Looking at each of these in turn:
For the Mary Watson born at York there are numerous marriage candidates, so nothing further can be said.
For the Mary Watson born at Barmby on the Moor the birth year is in excellent agreement. There are no obvious marriage or burial candidates, so this is worth considering. Is it purely coincidence? Or was this Mary now living and working in Beswick?
For the Mary Watson baptized at Overton there is a strong marriage candidate, although I have not been able to verify this with subsequent records.
Interestingly, looking for potential Mary Cammidge baptisms, there is one for Mary Camidge, daughter of Leonard Camidge and his wife Sarah, née Clint, baptized at York on 29 July 1781.[30] Furthermore, there are no obvious marriage or burial candidates to eliminate this possibility. The marriage to John Wride in 1833 stated that Mary Camidge was a spinster.
Proposed solution
Having reviewed all the above I propose the following:
John Wride married the Mary Watson who had been baptized at Barmby on the Moor in 1784.
Mary died in 1831 and was buried at Barmby on the Moor.
John decided to emigrate to Canada in April 1832 with the children still at home. He returned to Yorkshire following the shipwreck.
At Leeds in 1833 John married the Mary Camidge baptized at York in 1781.
This second Mary died in 1858 and was buried at Barmby on the Moor.
I have modified all three relevant profiles to show this solution.
