Biography

Edmond S. Wyatt was born in 1814 or before. He was the son of Edmond Wyatt and Mary Collett of Randolph County, Virginia.

Currently, the earliest records for him were in the 1830's. He was named in a lawsuit along with his sister-in-law, widow of his brother Thomas, and her two children, in a land dispute in Miami County, Indiana. The suit was brought in 1841 for a transaction in which he sold land in Miami County on July 27, 1837. [1] He also purchased other tracts of land in Indiana, the earliest it seems on September 30, 1835 in Hamilton, Indiana. [2] Also, several tracts in the adjacent Madison County [3][4][5] Given that he was at least 21 at the time of the first purchase in 1835, Edmund must have been born in 1814 or before.

If he was at one point a resident of Indiana, he was not in 1841 at the time of the suit, though he cannot be found in the 1840 or 1850 Census. He had moved back to Randolph County by 1851 as he married Martha Jane Foggy there in September 1851. She was the daughter of William Foggy. They obtained their license on September 3, and were married the next day on September 4. [6]

At the time of the 1860 Census Edmond and Martha were living in Monongalia County, Virginia. Living with them were their 6 children and Martha's son from a previous relationship. His age was given as 39, which was wildly off from his actual age of at least 46. He was also enumerated as Edward Wyatt, and this name would be seen for him in later records. [7]

Edmond must have had a bit of wanderlust, because he then entered the Union Army as a Private in Company A in the 1st Regiment of the West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry in 1861. He was taken prisoner in Madison County, Virginia on August 10, 1862 and died of disease as a prisoner of war in the Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on October 24, 1863. His wife, Martha, applied for a pension in November 1865. [8] In her testimony her age is given as 43, substantially older than the 35 enumerated in the 1860 Census the year before. Edward's name is consistently given as Edward with the exception of the testimony of the midwife in attendance on the birth of her son John R Wyatt who names him as Edmond S. Wyatt. The pension testimony confirms the date and place of Edmond's and Martha's marriage as well as the name of Martha's father, William. Also given in the testimony are the names and birthdates of their 6 children, all minors and also eligible for pension funds until they reached their majority. They were:

  1. John R b. June 9, 1852
  2. Mercy Ann b. April 10, 1854
  3. William F. b. October 3, 1855
  4. Mary E. b. December 25, 1858
  5. Sarah F. b. August 8, 1857
  6. Miriam b. April 13, 1860
