Biography

James Thomas was born at 17 Kingsbridge Place, Millwall, Poplar, Middlesex, England, on 21 May 1861. He was the son of James Wyeth, Mast and Block-Maker and Jane Elizabeth (Bryant) Wyeth.[1]

In the 1871 census James (age 11) was the son of James Wyatt (Wyeth), Marine Block Maker, on Walter Street, Lambeth, London & Surrey, England.[2]

In 1881 James (age 19) was a Publishers clerk. He was living with his widowed mother, Jane, a seamstress, at 25 Camellia Street, Lambeth, London. His 15 year old sister Emily was also with them as well as two boarders.[3]

James "George" Thomas Wyeth married Jane Louisa Poland on 25 December 1881 at Christ Church, Southwark, Southwark, England. James was 21 years old and a bookseller at the time of his marriage to Jane who was 19. He was living at 21 Nelson Square, Southwark. His father was James George Thomas Wyeth, a Block Maker.[4] When his daughter Amy was born in 1882, he was a Newsagent and then living at 14 Princes Street, a few doors down from where Jane was living, at 23 Princess Street, when they were married.[5][6]

James' young family, wife Jane and two children, Amy and James arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 24 August 1885 on the Abergeldie.[7] It is not known when James arrived in Australia but when his family arrived he was living at 2 Greens Road, Paddington.[8]

James must have been very proud of his sons; though it must have also been a very anxious time, especially having lost George [9]

Lance-Corporal, C. Wyeth, who had been with
the firm of J. L. Scott and Son, Footscray, for
four years, was presented by his employers
with a purse of sovereigns on the eve of his
departure for the front. Lance-Corp. Wyeth is
the third son of Mr. J. Wyeth, of Kurrama
(W.A.), and Mrs. J. L. Wyeth, of Inverloch,
South Gippsland, to give his services to the
Empire. Lance-Corp. G. Wyeth died of wounds
on June 23, 1916, and Lieutenant F. S. Wyeth
has been invalided home wounded.

James arrived on 22 August 1932 in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia having departed from Singapore, Singapore. He was a "wine & spirits merchant". This trip was likely related to the import license his son Frederick had to import Pimms No. 1 Cup and Remy Martin Brandy, into Australia in the early 20th century.[10]

After 55 years in Australia, James died at 74 years old on 7 July 1935. His Probate record shows: In this will of James George Thomas Wyeth (in this said Will called James George Wyeth) formerly of 319 Roma House 537 George Street Sydney in the state of New South Wales but late of 4 Gipps Street East Melbourne in the state of Victoria Gentleman deceased. He evidently returned to Victoria after spending time in Kurramia in Western Australia where he was a postmaster and shopkeeper in the 1910/1920s [11][12] and New South Wales. His Will, dated 2 January 1925, left his estate in the hands of Frederick Sydney Wyeth to distribute his real and personal estate to his children and sisters. He expressed one wish and that was for the personal effects and medals of his son George Melbourne Wyeth not be separated.[13][14]

His death notice reads:[15]

Mr. J. G. F. WYETH,
Mr. James Geo. Frederick
Wyeth, one of the best known
men in the early history of Inver-
loch, died in Sydney (see Research Notes) on the 7th
July, at the age of 74 years. He
formerly lived at "The Castle" at
Inverloch, but had not been at his
old home for some years. He is
survived by a widow and three
sons.

Research Notes

  • His birth registration in England has him as James Thomas, as does his death registration in Australia.
  • His Marriage, Immigration and Probate records have him as James "George" Thomas and the Probate record "corrects" this name to be James George Wyeth, not mentioning Thomas!
  • His Death Notice has him as James "Geo. Frederick", which was actually his son's name. He had died in 1920.
  • His death notice said he died in Sydney but this is not the case. Refer his death registration in Victoria and Probate record.
  • Further to his death notice, it's not clear who the 3 sons were. 2 sons, James in 1920 and George in 1916 had already died. This left Frederick and Calvert. There are no other known sons.

Was passing through and noticed you have a gap for the 1871 census... Could this be them, listed as Wyatt and living in Lambeth: on familysearch? If you haven't already explored the sources on this familysearch profile you might find something more there that helps, too.
