Obituary

Cheltenham Examiner 12 June 1913, page 3:
MR. GEORGE WYNDHAM, M.P.
The death occurred suddenly at the Hotel Liverpool, Paris, on Sunday, of the Right Hon. George Wyndham, M.P. for Dover. Mr. Wyndham had a brilliant career as politician and author. A grandson of the first Lord Leconfield, and a great grandson of the Irish Martyr of 1798, Lord Edmond Fitzgerald, and of Pamela, the natural daughter of Louis Philippe "Egalite", he was educated at Eton, and passed into Sandhurst, receiving a commission in the Coldstream Guards before he was twenty one. He served at Suakin in 1885, but resigned the Service to enter political life as private secretary to Mr. A. J. Balfour, then Chief Secretary for Ireland, entering Parliament in 1889 as Conservative member for Dover. In 1887 he married the widowed Countess Grosvenor. Mr. Wyndham worked with Mr. Balfour until the Unionist Government went out in 1892. In 1898 he became Under-Secretary for War, and during the South African War he made a political reputation by his skilful defence of Lord Landsdowne and the War office from the attacks of the Opposition. In 1900 he became Chief Secretary for Ireland, and in 1902 entered the Cabinet. Of his earnest desire to secure the peace and well-being of Ireland there could be no doubt, and his selection as Under-Secretary of an Irishman who was a Liberal and Home Ruler in politics, and in religion a Roman Catholic - Sir Antony (now Lord) Macdonnell - marked a serious determination to grapple with the Irish question. The new alliance bore fruit in the Land Purchase Act of 1903 and in the semi-official support given to Lord Dunraven's scheme of devolution. Subsequently, however, largely owing to the Ulster wing of the Unionist party, who considered that he had shown dangerous leanings towards Home Rule, he found himself compelled to resign. Mr. Wyndham employed his leisure by returning to literature. In pre-Ministerial days he had published an edition of North's Plutarch, and he now produced some admirable translations from Ronsard and the other poets of the Pleiade. Mr. Wyndham was one of the handsomest and best-dressed men in the House of Commons. He leaves a son, Mr. Percy Wyndham, who was married only in April last to the Hon. Diana Lister. Lady Elcho is a sister of the deceased statesman, who is well remembered by local politicians, he having twice addressed Unionist mass meetings at the Cheltenham Town Hall.[5]

His will was proved on 25 June 1913 to his son Percy Lyulph Wyndham lieutenant Coldstream Guards. Effects: £205584 3s. 8d.
