Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Edward Yarbrough was a Virginia colonist.

Edward was born about 1675. [Birth Year is estimated based on owning a plantation before 1706.]

Herring Creek in Counties of Caroline and King William.

Edward Yarbrough's plantation in King William County was recorded in a land grant to Samuel Williams and William Lee dated the 2nd of May 1706. Williams' and Lee's land was on the south side of the upper Herring Creek and on the South side of Perry's Swamp below the mouth of a branch that heads at Edward Yarbrough's plantation.[1] One should note that the elder Richard Yarbrough (1615-1702), owned land on Herring Creek which his son, John Yarbrough, sold in 1704.[2] That information places this Edward Yarbrough living in the same area in 1704 where John Yarbrough lived. Also, Arnold's ferry on the map has been referred to in land grants and historical accounts as Yarbrough's ferry.

On the 20th day of February 1723, Edward Yarbrough and William Yarbrough of King William County were jointly granted 400 acres of land lying and being on the West side of Long branch in St. John's Parish in the county of King William which was noted as adjoining lands of Robert Baber and William Cockerham.[3]

Caroline County, Virginia was created in 1727 from King William County which then encompassed part of the lands on Herring Creek. Edward Yarbrough received a land grant for another 200 acres between the south fork and middle fork of Reedy Swamp in Saint Margarets Parish in Caroline County beginning at a corner in William Cockerham's line, and in Mr. Mergo [sp] Ingles' line on the 27th day of September 1729.[4] Also, one Richard Yarbrough was granted 400 acres lying in King William County upon the branch of the Reedy Swamp issuing out of Mattapony River and the branches the Northanna in St. Johns Parish adjoining Mr. Inglishes line to Edward Claybrook, Wm. Yarbrough and Edward and William Yarbrough's line on the 13th of October 1727.[5]

At a Caroline County court held Saturday the 15th day of January 1736, a case was tried for James Yarbrough by Edward Yarbrough his next friend plt. & Robert Baber, John Butler Defts.[6] The term next friend indicates that Edward Yarbrough appeared in court for James because he was a minor or considered incompetent.

He passed away after 1736.

Children

A document is needed to prove children. Based on his land lying in Caroline county, one of his children is perhaps Charles Yarbrough.

Research Notes

As early as 1646, one Edward Yarborough had died in York County, Virginia who had a son named Edward Yarborough. On the 25th day of May 1646, one Richard Vagmuse [sp], in consideration he did bear unto Edward Yarborough son of Edward Yarborough late of York conveyed a horse and a black and white cow calfe [sic] to Edward.[7] That Edward Yarbrough was later recorded at a court held in York County on the 25th of June 1658. It was ordered that the Sheriff convey Edward Yarbrough, son of Edward Yarbrough, dec'd to the next Court, able, & be delivered from Constable to Constable until he be delivered to Col. Robert Abrall, who is desired by this Court to dispose of him to his mother or other ways which are fitting.[8]

York County was originally named Charles River until 1642 which included what is now the counties of York, James City, New Kent, King William, King and Queen, and Hanover. In 1700 the county of King William was formed, and begins at the head of York River and lies between the Mattaponi and Pamunke rivers and extends NW to the county of Caroline.
