Biography

Itje was born on April 8, 1884 in Nijhuizum, Friesland, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Luitzen Ykema and Ybeltje Osinga.[1]

Itje married Age Wildschut (born in Gaastmeer, 29 years old) on May 11, 1907 in Wijmbritseradeel.[2] They had 9 children:

  • Lourens Wildschut, born on October 4, 1908
  • Ybeltje Wildschut, born on August 23, 1910
  • Luitzen Wildschut, born on June 8, 1912
  • Roelof Wildschut, born on September 4, 1913 in Gaastmeer, died on October 3, 1913
  • Roelof Wildschut, born on October 9, 1914 in Gaastmeer
  • Jouke Wildschut, born on June 27, 1916 in Gaastmeer
  • Jelle Wildschut, born on February 27, 1918 in Gaastmeer
  • Herre Wildschut, born in 1921, died on June 5, 1922
  • Aukje Wildschut, born in 1924

Age, Itje, and children immigrated to the USA in 1924, arriving at Ellis Island in New York aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam.[3]

The family settled in Zeeland, Zeeland, Ottawa, Michigan. Age (now Andrew} returned to the Netherlands. He is absent on the 1930 and 1940 census.[4][5][6] His obituary speaks of "18 years of sickness and suffering and enforced separation from his loved ones".

Itje (now Ellen) passed away on July 1, 1974 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, and was buried at Zeeland Cemetery in Zeeland, Ottawa County, Michigan.[7]
