Biography

Wendell Ray York was one of five children born to Newton Elbert York and his wife, Ada Owens York in 1910 in the very small town of Mark, Iowa. He attended a one room school house through the 8th grade He then boarded in the town of Bloomfield, Iowa in order to attended Bloomfield High School where he attained a remarkable academic record that stood for many years! He was a remarkable athlete, competing in several sports, including baseball and football. He was an outstanding pitcher, compared to Bob Feller, and achieved many records. He attended Monmouth College in Galesburg, Illinois for two years , where he continued his outstanding pitching! When an arm injury forced him off the mound, he had to leave college due to the Great Depression. He joined the Baseball leagues in the midwest and then made a huge change by moving to New Jersey to coach football for his friend Neil Sands, at Kearny High School. He also went to work for the DuPont company, where he met and Married a beautiful Irish Catholic girl, Margaret Halpin. They raised three daughters, Linda, Pam and Wendy. They lost an infant daughter at 8 months, Barbara Wendell York. Wendell worked for DuPont for many years and then worked for Standard Tool and Manufacturing Company until his early death at the age of 49!
