Preston and family lived at 307 Randolph Street in Charleston, West Virginia in 1930. He was the proprietor of a Restaurant and owned the home which was worth $5,000.00. By 1940, Preston and his wife were living at 307 Randolph Street in the household of their son, Irvin, and his wife, Lou. Preston was still the proprietor of the restaurant. His son, Charles, was also living in Irvin's house. Preston's World War I Draft Card lists the name of the restaurant as "Capitol Chop House" at 621 Kanawha in Charleston. His physical description was 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown eyes and black hair.
The US City Directories, 1821-1989, list Preston living at the address recorded above; but, his occupation differs. According to the 1914 Charleston Directory, he was a clerk. The 1930 Charleston Directory lists him as a waiter; the 1938 Charleston Directory shows him as a bartender; and, the 1940 Charleston Directory has his occupation as cook.
