James was married to Velilia V. Helmey on March 26, 1886 by the Rev. J. Austin.[3] The Georgia marriage licenses states the date was March 28, 1886.[4] They had 9 children by the 1900 census[5] and 12 children (of whom 9 were living) by the 1910 census.[6] James was a farmer and lived in Effingham County for most of his life.[7][8]
He died on September 23, 1940 in Marlow [9] and is buried in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Guyton (Effingham County), Georgia.[1][9][10]
