Akira Yoshizawa was born to a farming family in Kaminokawa, Tochigi Prefecture on 14 March 1911. As a child, he taught himself origami, the traditional art of paper folding. Although he gained a factory job in Tokyo, upon being promoted to a draftsman, he taught geometry to other employees using origami. In 1937, he left his factory job to focus on his career in origami.

During World War II, Akira served in Hong Kong, making origami models to console some sick patients. After falling ill himself, he was sent back to Japan, where he continued to pursue his creativity. It was his first major work that helped establish the Yoshizawa-Randlett system of notation for origami folds. That work also helped him out of his twenty-year poverty.

Akira exhibited his origami models, lending them to exhibitors around the world. He never sold the models he created, but he gave them away as gifts. His wife Kiyo also managed the models he folded himself. He passed away in the Itabashi ward of Tokyo on 14 March 2005.
