Texas adoption of Polish orphan in late 1800s / early 1900s. Help?

I'm trying to help a friend find some information on a possible adoptee in their family.

The family lore says that Lennie (Ludosky / Ludowsky) was orphaned as her family was coming to America from Poland. She was then adopted by Andrew and Harriet (Bigham) Johnson in Eastland County, Texas. Lennie was b. ca. 1887.

Also, it is said that Lennie was Jewish, and that was controversial for the time.

I have no experience researching Polish records, and I find that Texas is a closed-adoption state, although I'm not sure that applies as far back as this adoption would have taken place.

Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? :-D

Thanks!

Hello, Miss Julie

I do Jews

Can you determine the year she was adopted?
Eddie,

From what I’ve learned, the family doesn’t have that info. I’m not even sure about the spelling of her LNAB. Ask the records seem to use it as a middle name and spell it Ludosky, but the family has spelled it Ludowsky in their correspondence with me.
she's with Hattie as mother in the 1900 census
I was just heading there. Hadn't gotten to it yet.

okay, then, the task is to find immigration records from Poland between 1887 and 1900
Yup ... found the 1900 Census on FamilySearch.
I'm going to flesh out the family. Are you interested in searching for the immigration records?
can work on it

keep in mind for others looking into this

1. Poland was not Poland then. It was Russia

2. Polish names did not use Y. End consonant would have to be I or A
Good insight ... thanks!
also, don't limit search to just Lennie immigrating

she may have had siblings adopted elsewhere

the key would be tracking the accompanying adults

if they were on the ship but don't appear in USA records, thereafter, probably deceased

Right ... I have no idea when or where her parents would have died. In other words, on the ship on the way over or after they got here. Or even before they left.

OR ... if she came from Poland (aka Russia) at all. It could just be family lore.

I should say that all the other family lore I've been told about has proven out, though.
I set my search parameters to Ludowski / variatons

immigration year 1895 +- 10

see you tomorrow, maybe

as to origin, name variations are Poland/Belarus primarily
OK ... working on her "adoptive" parents right now to see what turns up.

I'll see if there's anything on FamilySearch re: immigration, too.
you realize, Miss Julie, that while I research, I play b-movie

sci fi movies as background to block out the real world and

consume vast quantities of coffee and cigars

must now decide on movies - I'm leaning toward giant bugs
We just finished Thor Ragnarok. Much cheekier than I expected.

No coffee and cigars, though.

Jewishgen lists another name variation Wlodowski

Interesting. Would never have considered that.

Thanks, Eddie!

It's going to take me some time to digest and document these in a way that I can go through them systematically.

Thanks for your help! I may be back. ;-)
you might start with the family that went to Arkansas - pretty close to Texas

also Jewish families took care of each other

if she was adopted out, likely there were no Jewish relatives to take her in

if she was from New York and came to Texas by orphan train, maybe try connecting

http://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/National_Orphan_Train_Complex

Just now coming back to this.

Family learned that her parents may have died on the way over. So, Lennie may have been orphaned by the time she got here.

I'm going to start looking into the Orphan Train info. Thanks!

I checked and it looks like Texas is locked down regardless of time period. There may be no formal adoption in this case anyway. I hope Eddie can help you get answers. But also, as a Genetic Genealogist, I always recommend Ancestry DNA as well. This isn't too far back in time, so a DNA test could identify the correct parents. Best of luck!

Thanks, Emma!

I'll suggest a DNA test. The person in question is the paternal grandmother of my friend's father. So, I would suggest autosomal and mitochondrial, correct?
Just autosomal. Mitochondrial won't give you the kind of information you need for this kind of search. I also recommend Ancestry DNA as the test of choice for many many reasons. I can find answers in a couple of hours at Ancestry whereas it might take me months elsewhere.
