Hi, I'm looking to try to extend the family tree of Harry Searles, born in York 1918.

Father, Harry Searles; born 1891 Tolleshunt Knights, Essex, died

Mother: Lilian Oldridge, born  York, 1896, died 1942.

Any more info?

Sister Nan: born York 1914

2nd Sister Jean, born around 1933, can't find her birth details

Go back to your question.  Bottom right will be a small link [edit].  You might like to edit your question - you said he was born in 2018, rather than 1918!

Your best bet is to first upgrade your Guest membership and sign the Honor Code. This is free for all.

Once that's done, just simply expand your personal family tree profile to include your parents, great grandparents, etc...

If you have approx information regarding them, just do the best you can.

Once you have a few generations to work with, you should be able to perform a research (via RootSearch) for additional information/details.

Good Luck! :-)

Thank you, I'm a complete novice so that's very useful advice.
This is okay as that's what the G2G is here for.

Once you've done the above, go to the WikiTree Profile (of your Ancestor in question) and then edit your question here and then replace your WikiTree ID/link with the Ancestor's WikiTree ID/Link your inquiring about.

I hope I had explained this okay via text... :-)

For 1837 to recent times, FreeBMD https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl  is very useful.  For example a search for Jean Searles gives:

Surname  First name(s)  Mother  District  Vol  Page

Births Dec 1933   (>99%)
SEARLES  Jean E  Wheeler  Southampton  2c 78  image Scan available - click to view
SEARLES  Jean M  Oldridge  Gt.Ouseburn  9a 99  image Scan available - click to view

Also use the GRO index - you can search it for free and it will give mother's maiden names for earlier births ( still post 1837 ) when FreeBMD does not.  Register here ( free ) : https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Searching for Harry gives:

SEARLES, HARRY     OLDRIDGE
GRO Reference: 1917  June Quarter in YORK  Volume 09D  Page 15
