Speaking for myself, my Morgans originated in Wales and moved to Germany.
Yes, there are many, many Morgan families in America (it is among the 100 most common surnames), and they have many, many different immigrant progenitors. Some were from Wales, and some were from Germany, and probably yet more still were from elsewhere.

I have cousins originally surnamed "Mergen", with German origin... some (not all though) changed spelling to "Morgan" after a few generations in USA. Also have deceased cousin named "Morgan," with origin in Wales...

Thanks for answering my question. This seems to be the case with my Morgan lineage. I can trace it to 1600s Palitinate  in Germany. My father (deceased) was under the impression he had Welsh ancestors. Not the case. All German, originally Morgen. Seems to have changed spelling before the Civil War, so unrelated to WWI or WWII. All my Morgan ancestors located to Eastern PA; eventually my line became coal miners in Schuylkill County. Pennsylvania Deutsch....

Morgan is one of the THE ancient Welsh names. German families with this name were probably originally Morgen (morning) or Mergen, as Lincoln points out, and are unrelated to the Welsh Morgans.

The name is among the older surnames and originated in Wales. It spread through the UK and then to North america and many other countries where they had a colony or presence. The name is also accepted as a branch of the Scottish MacKay Clan. There was a German song on the radio many years ago that was "Morgen Morgen" in German. As the other person said that meant morning or good morning. I have seen an early German line in eastern PA. that changed the spelling of their name to Morgan and spread west.

My Morgan line has been traced back to about 1200 in Wales. Both my Ancestry and 23andMe DNA shows a great percentage from that part of UK.

I always thought that our Morgan family were 'very' Welsh - until I started doing the family tree - now discovering that we originally came from Ireland (County Down) and arrived in Swansea with my great great grandfather William (soldier) and his family - that's the fascinating thing about family trees !
