Thanks for your question, Henry.  I've added additional tags to your post so more people will see it, and a link to John's profile.

I've done some preliminary work on this profile and a fellow researcher, J Crawford, is continuing that work.  If additional information comes to light, we would be very interested in looking into it.

Henry, I've gone and done it, I've gotten myself a wild and crazy theory. See 4.8 under the Unproven Claims, there's a snowball's chance in ...Virginia...that there is a yet-unknown descendant of the Lefnoris branch (from Dalmegregan, related to yet not directly descended from Auchenames) who may fit the bill.

It would still take some proving, and I'm checking with leveler heads than my own, but this is fun!

Please include me in any new info of John's connection in Scotland. I am descended from his son,David and David's daughter Sarah.

Great to meet you Delbert! Keep an eye on https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:John_Crawford_of_Ayrshire%2C_Scotland_and_Virginia%2C_United_States&public=1, hopefully everyone will update that free space page with any new information.

You should also check out https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Laurus_Crawfurdiana, as it is an entire history of the family.

Do you think their origins are near Glasgow?

My 23&me origin profile shows fairly strong link to Glasgow. Glasgow is #5 on a list of 10 likely sites.
Henry: We have a few Crawfords in the our tree when your further along perhaps we can share some info. Cheers

Hi John,

I am thinking that the only way to secure a connection to Scotland is through DNA. I don't know how to proceed but one of the younger folks should be able to figure it out.wink

John/Henry, all threads welcome to be pulled on! See the space page https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:John_Crawford_of_Ayrshire%2C_Scotland_and_Virginia%2C_United_States&public=1 and feel free to edit and add any results or ideas you have! Even chasing down dead ends that can be shown to mean nothing means we're narrowing down options.

Someone suggested investigating Witherspoon (signer of the Declaration of Independence) as there were supposedly Crawfords in his retinue, but haven't had a chance yet.

John, I will look up Carmichael in my copy of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Laurus_Crawfordiana and see if he is mentioned, although if he was a knight in service of the Castle Crawford (which at that point may have been occupied by the Lindsays), he may not be present.

Also, I don't see the Crawford's in your wikitree Family Tree yet, do you have any names/dates you can share?

John Carmichael is not mentioned in Laurus Crawfordiana, the only mention of the name is in the 1620s/30s when Cornelius Crawfurd of Jordanhill married "Mary daughter of Sir James Lockhart of Lee", and there is a note about her eight branches of which one (on her father's side) is "Carmichall of that Ilk"

I did find a note on the Clan Crawford Association webpage noting the history of the clan (http://clancrawfordassoc.org/history) and includes the history of Castle Crawford relating to Carmichael as thus:

"In 1398 David Lindsay was granted the title of Earl of Crawford by Robert II. David Lindsay had married Robert II's sister Marjorie. In 1488 the Barony was transferred to Angus Douglas whose descendants held it until 1578. James V used it as a hunting lodge for a period of time until his death in 1542. His mistress, Catherine Carmichael's father was Captain of the Crawford Castle guard. James V built a castle in Crawfordjohn for their trysts."
