Advice before editing this pre-1700 Lindley profile?

I have information to contribute to the profile of James Lindley Jr.

(this is actually a categories question, but I can't seem to figure out how to ask questions properly)

The category [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Irish_Quakers]

which is already tagged on James' profile, appears to be a higher-level category--it states "This category managed by the Quakers Project is for:

  • Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland,
  • Irish Quakers whose individual Meeting membership is unknown and,
  • Free-Space pages related to the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland."
To me, this means that if the Meeting is known, then the "Irish Quakers" category should be removed from the individual profile...right?

Perhaps the question should be:  Should I be adding Irish Quakers to BOTH the Irish_Quakers category AND their meeting in Ireland, or is the meeting enough?

general principle, when dealing with upper level categories, categorize by lowest category in category tree that can be applied.

I agree with your reasoning, Loretta, but don't know enough to say for sure that the Irish Quakers category should be removed.

Thanks for asking. If they know the Monthly Meeting, WikiTree members should use that and not add the general Irish Quakers category too. This reflects the general WikiTree principle that we use narrower rather than broader categories.

Incidentally, the Quakers Project uses Monthly Meetings for categorising Quakers, not individual local meetings, and is not creating categories for local meetings.

I have removed the Irish Quakers category from James Lindley's profile.

Having said which, I have now looked at the page for the Ireland Quakers Team, overseen by the Irish Roots Project: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Ireland_Quaker_Team. This asks members of the team to use the Irish Quakers category, and they are doing so in addition to Irish Monthly Meeting categories. I may have been too influenced by the Quakers Project practice for other countries.

The Categorisation Project is, incidentally, currently reviewing the categorisation structure for religious groups and has tabled some proposals. See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1248243/structure-associated-information-religious-congregations.
