Proposing a New Black Sea German Sticker [closed]

Hi Everyone,

 Choice 5 - The Unofficial flag of the black Sea Germans (Planer Kolonien) was the winner of the G2G vote for a new sticker for the Black Sea Germans.

Would we like to move ahead and use this sticker on our profiles? To have the sticker made, we need at least three people to weigh in and say they will use it on their profiles.

This sticker should not be attached to any category.

Please have the sticker say, "____ was a Black Sea German" and call it the Black Sea Germans sticker.

The text on the category info page should read: "This sticker can be placed on the profiles of people who were born in or lived in the Black Sea German Colonies"

Thank you all for your help in the process! I'm looking forward to our new sticker.

Warm Regards,

Carrie Lippincott, Black Sea Germans Team Leader

What was edited?

I did an earlier edit to remove the request to attach the sticker to the Black Sea Germans Colonies. [So to not add individuals to this category.]
I wanted to know what Kylie changed.

We now have a sticker! {{Black Sea Germans}} can be used on the profiles of people who were born in or lived in the Black Sea German Colonies. No categories are attached to this sticker, but colony subcategories for BSG exist here: HERE and can be added manually. I will be putting out a newsletter in the Google Group and G2G soon with more info on Germany Project stickers ... keep an eye out for it in the next day or 2.

We have two stickers we can use.  One sticker is for people who lived in  or were born in the Black Sea area and another sticker for descendents of Black Sea Germans. See the information here; Black Sea Stickers

Thank you Traci and the Template team  for helping to make the stickers a reality!  I'm happily adding them to profiles I mange.

Good work Carrie. That was also my favorite.

At the moment I don't have identified ancestors from the Black Sea area, but if I would use it.

Maybe someday you will find a connection! I've love to be related and officially call you a cousin!  Thank you so much Dieter for finding the images for us and adding them to Wikitree!

A good decision. I also liked that best. I only have a few profiles in Bessarabia, but I like stickers a lot and would love to use this one.

Wait, the sticker won't tie to a category?  I was hoping, when I asked for a "Black Sea Germans" sticker, that it would tie to a category.  Then, we could use that cool new connections function and see how many "black sea germans" we connect to.  I had hoped we get something that was a little more specific than the "german roots" sticker.

But, to answer the specific question posed, YES, I will absolutely use this sticker on my Black Sea German profiles.  (I wouldn't have asked for one otherwise, hehe).

Hi C,

There are 8 different colony categories for Black Sea Germans that you can add to your profiles here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Black_Sea_German_Colonies.

As there is one sticker and 8 colonies, you will need to manually add the specific colony category to the profile.

I also was noticing that issue with the new connection function for our Black Sea Germans' Category. It would be great if the "My Connections" also had the ability to reach down into sub-categories to profiles below, telling us our connections.
It looks like the "My Connections" feature is available in BSG subcategories, i.e.: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Bessarabia_%28Province%29

Yeah. It will add shine to your already beautiful profiles!
Thank you Carrie and for your leadership. We all keep learning as we go...learn something new every day. Will it be auto-added to profiles or do we add to each profile when it is ready?

I totally understand about the learning curve. I've been on a massive one, trying to figure things out!  I'm happy that things are starting to come together.  Hopefully it will make it easier for all of us to do our research.

I have no idea about adding the stickers.  It would be wonderful if they could be auto added. My guess is that we will have to manually add them.

 If anyone has knowledge of how to auto add stickers, please let us know!

Stickers have to be added individually and at the discretion of the profile manager. Some PM's don't want stickers on the profiles they manage. However, you CAN add the colony subcategories to any profile. See them here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Black_Sea_German_Colonies.

Be sure that the sticker is really well defined or it will get misused.

The Volga German sticker is supposed to be for individuals that migrated to the Volga colonies or were born in the Volga colonies, but it's defined on the project page, not on the sticker page. So Volga German researchers keep adding the existing sticker to people not born in the colonies, including WikiTree members themselves. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Volga_German

I asked for a sticker a while back for people descended from Volga Germans that researchers could put on their profiles: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1057004/volga-german-sticker-clarification. Unfortunately, it has gained no traction as the German project leaders don't understand the Volga Germans either.

So, I'd recommend that you do two stickers, if you can. One for colonists, and one for descendants, as people really like their stickers. smiley

Thank you Allison for the suggestion.

What do people think?  Two stickers?

 Choice 5 - Unofficial flag of the black Sea Germans (Planer Kolonien) Our first choice (9 votes) for colonists and people born in the Black Sea Area?

I'd love to see our second choice (6 votes) -

 Choice 2 - Black Sea - White Outline - Larger Black Sea Image

used for Black Sea Descendents/Black Sea German Researchers.  i admit, I'd love to be able to use this sticker on my profile, it was my first choice. laugh

What do you all think?  Should we have one or two stickers?

Allison, my understanding is that you can propose the sticker for use here on the G2G and if you get three people agreeing to use it, it will be made....I'm happy to help you rally for support if you'd like. smiley

It seems that the description on the template page needs to be updated to reflect what the Volga sticker is for.

Carrie - One BSG sticker should be good for now as there are no categories attached to the BSG sticker and we're at the end of the template request process.

Allison - your response is off-topic. Please don't say the Germany Project leaders "don't understand the Volga Germans". Your G2G post about that matter was made over a year ago and I had personally never seen it until today. Also, last year, Natalie answered your post and explained how the VG sticker came into existence.

Background: Volga Germans is now a Team and is no longer considered a project/sub-project. In the early years of WikiTree, VG was a separate project that managed VG profiles, but that ended a few years ago. The VG project box should no longer be used on any profiles and the VG sticker was created to replace the VG project box. The VG team (team leader is Russ), under the Germany  Project, should decide exactly what they want their sticker(s) to say, run their ideas past the Germany Project leaders, and then post to G2G to request the sticker, following the guidelines set out here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Stickers#Creation_and_Editing

Finally, adding the German Roots stickers is up to the individual profile managers and is not monitored by the Germany project. The German Roots sticker is attached to one category as regional categories are not widely in place for the project yet (German regions are very difficult to categorize because they changed so often). If you'd like to volunteer to work on categorization for the Germany project, it would be appreciated.

Carrie,

If you want to help with the Volga German descendants sticker, I would love that. The link to it is in my original comment.

Traci, I've discussed the Volga German project with the German project leadership and they told me they didn't understand it and were looking into it. That is the last I heard. I think you are reading into my comments something that isn't there.The Volga Germans and the Black Sea Germans actually had a lot in common, including research resources because they were both groups of Germans the migrated into Russia under the invite of Catherine the Great, they are both under the German project, they both have their own colonist stickers and colony categories. My comment is far from off-topic.
I am a Germany Project leader Allison. As you are no longer a member of the Germany Project or on the VG Team, I will ask the VG team members if they want the current sticker revised.
Yes, I am taking a break from projects due to health issues, however, that doesn't illegitimize me or my comments.
Allison, I'm sorry to hear about your limitations due to health issues.   I hope that you are back to full steam soon.

Just to clarify. Will we be able to use the new Black Sea Germans sticker for:

* colonists ?

* people born in the area ?

* descendants of Black Sea Germans, if desired ?

* Black Sea German researchers, if desired?

It would be good for all of us to known right off the bat and defined, so to  alleviate any confusion like Allison has brought up.   Is the sticker free to use as we see fit, due to not having any category attached?

We are all excited to have the sticker in the works!!!

The sticker can be used however you see fit because there are no categories attached, just like the VG sticker. If there is later a need for it, we can add "switches" to the existing sticker: descendant of, born in, colonist, etc. if there's interest. This is what we will request to be done with the VG sticker, because it already exists on WIkiTree. Let's please finish the process of getting the proposed BSG sticker created right now.

Thanks Traci. That's nice to hear that we are free to use however we would like!  Hurrah!!!  I look forward to seeing it.

Natalie Trott responded to this question on the other link you provided. Here is what I know for further clarification: I went back to my emails and in March 2019 the Using Top Level Category DD suggestion came out, thus everyone within the Volga German Project [[Category:Volga German Project]] was limited to WikiTreers who were project members. When I came to WT, the VG project category was being used on all VG profiles along with the VG and German Roots stickers. Natalie confirmed that high level VG project cat. was used incorrectly for whatever reason and at that time there was not a German Roots leader. Julie Mangano informed me and we began a very time consuming process to go in and remove it from the profiles as we were told. This was also a DD issue as mentioned by Natalie. I went back to a profile of mine and evidently there was just German Roots used and then EditBot updated that to German Roots sticker in October 2018. Thus we were told to use this:

== Biography ==

{{Volga_German}}

{{German Roots Sticker}}

A previous VG member appeared to use it to corral all VG people whether they lived in a colony or were a descendent. So as for function, at least with a sticker we are able to search for all profiles that are Volga Germans (as many profiles may just say Russia).

As for if a profile looks pretty or not, that is an enhancement. I'm more about function and proper research/sources.  Would like to hopefully one day see all Village categories on both the Volga Germans and Black Sea. It is very time consuming as Carrie can attest and I have made an attempt as I can.

I think it would be good to email Russ if you want further clarification as he is the leader.

As for the Black Sea Germans sticker and how it is used, my personal opinion is that it could be used for those who were born in these colonies. If we use it open-ended then that is fine too.

However German Roots sticker is sorted out seems to be a Volga German and Germany Project question. You indicated GR sticker is a high-level category and should not be used - note - it was auto-added to all of our VG profiles. For the leaders, once a decision is made one way or the other, PLEASE auto-add/remove whatever as I refuse to spend that kind of time on profiles in a menial way.
