Coronation Day Pop-Up Challenge!

In honor of the Coronation of King Charles III, we have a special pop-up challenge. This one is actually more of scavenger hunt.

Did you know that there are actually 42 monarchies in the world? Only nine are in Europe, the rest are spread across the globe. Malaysia actually has nine monarchs, from which they choose one to serve as "Supreme Ruler" (King of Malaysia) every five years. The United Arab Emirates has seven monarchs - one for each emirate.

Today's pop-up challenge is to help locate each of the world's current monarchs on WikiTree. When you find one, post their ID number below and I'll update the list with a link to their page. I am almost certain some of these royal families are still lacking a presence on WikiTree, in which case we will need to get their profiles added. Let's see how many we can locate.

Nations is red appear to be lacking WikiTree profiles for their current monarchs.

Fifteen monarchs (35%) found in first 60 minutes. Quite impressive! I have to admit I'm a bit surprised at how many of these profiles are still privacy locked. We'll have to look into what we can do about that.

Great work right off the bat Aaron.

But I just goofed and edited your post instead of mine. Can you repost the link to the King of Bahrain. Sorry!
Done. I'll let someone else look for the rest.

The current king of Belgium: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippe_of_Belgium is probably on Wikitree, but unlisted. The previous king, his father, is also unlisted: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sachsen-Coburg_und_Gotha-38.

African Monarchs:

King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

I don't think the king of Eswatini (Wikipedia) is on WikiTree. His father is Sobhuza Dlamini (Dlamini-3). There are several unlisted Dlamini's that I suppose could be him - one is managed by the notables project (Dlamini-2).

I don't think the king of Lesotho (Wikipedia) is on WikiTree. His father is Constantine Bereng Seeiso, aka Moshoeshoe II (Seeiso-1).

There also probably needs to be some categorization work done related to these African monarchs. To name a few things:

  • Eswatini was formerly known as Swaziland until 2018 and currently, there is only the Swaziland category, no category/name change for Eswanti.
  • The African Nobility category is in the worldwide Aristocracy and Nobility category stream, but under the Africa category there is also an African Royalty category. Neither has subcategories for specific countries nor are there any categories for specific kingships, royal houses/families, etc.
Dlamini-2 is not the King of Eswatini. It is actually Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a South African politician and anti-Apartheid leader. I have opened her profile for public viewing.
I agree with you 100% Christy regarding the need to take a look at the categorization system for African royals. I actually think we're going to need to take a look at a number of unexpected issues that have been brought to the forefront arisen somewhat off-the-cuff pop-up challenge.

I'm thinking the Notables Project may need to pull together a Royalty Commitee to help sort some of these things out. But I'll wait until this challenge is a little further along before making any decisions on how best to move forward.
Sounds good David. I know Africa in general needs a lot of work on categorization, etc., not just with these royalty categories. Just thought I'd bring it up while there's a focus on royalty around the world.

And I think this is how you can find the remaining two European monarchs:

  • Spain - I couldn't find an ID for King Felipe VI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felipe_VI) of Spain, but I think he has a profile on WT. His father's Wikidata links to Bourbon-77 (private). His grandfather is Bourbon-76, and if you look at his descendants list, he has one private son and that son has three private children, one of which is probably King Felipe VI.
  • Liechtenstein has Princes for their reigning monarchs. The last open profile for a Prince of Liechtenstein is Franz Joseph II (Liechtenstein-6). He has a private son who was born in the 1940's who is probably Prince Hans-Adam II, who according to Wikipedia is still considered the head of state, although he appointed his son Alois (Hereditary Prince and Regent of Liechtenstein) as regent in 2004.

I'll also note that there is a category for the House of Liechtenstein, but no categories for nobility/royals of Liechtenstein.

Thank you Aaron, Scott, Joke, Christy, Darren, Rob and Lisa for your help with this royal pop-up challenge.

I was honestly anticipating that most of our current monarchs would already have well-developed WikiTree profiles and that they would most certainly be open for viewing. It turns out that out that only nine current monarchs have open WikiTree profiles and less than half have WikiTree profiles at all. That was not at all what I was expecting.

Well, if you know me at all, you know what this means...there's another Wiki Project on the horizon! I'm not sure what format this project will take, but if you're interested in modern royalty and want to get in on the planning stages, I'd love to hear your ideas. Leave me a note here or send me a private message.

In the meantime, if you want to add a few more royal bios, please feel free. Just let me know so I can keep the list updated.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with this challenge.
