First King of Portugal “Afonso (Portugal) de Portugal (1109 - 1185)”

Hi Wikitreers,

Just for fun…Looking at various connections this one surprised me, but is it even possible to be a 27th gg; it seems confident.

I always take this kind of genealogy with a grain of salt.

Fun none the less laugh

Anyone else who is a direct relative of the First King of Portugal?

Note: apparently I connect through the daughter named Urraca Bourgogne (abt. 1150 - abt. 1211)

He is my 24th great grandfather, with quite a few grains of salt (as with all the other royalty I’m “descended” from).

Why isn't the first King of Portugal and the Portuguese identified in the way all Portuguese know him???

D. Afonso Henriques

(means Afonso son of Henrique (Henry))

Also, his father was in fact a French nobleman who came to help the King of Leon and Castilla D. Alfonso VI, conquer back the Iberian Peninsula and got married to one of the daughters of the King, D. Thareza and received the Land of Portus Cale or Condado Portucalense, as a reward.

D. Afonso was acclaimed King after the Ourique Battle, by his troops in 1139.

In 1143 Alfonso VII recognized Portugal as a kingdom, but only in 1179 did the Pope recognize it.

He married with D. Mafalda  de Sabóia and had 7 children

Besides this marriage, D.Afonso Henriques had 6 children from other women

There were 2 daughters, named Urraca

Maybe because Wikitree is very American (US) centric with a heavy English/Britain influence?
LOL

This is a very important debate. I personally think we should use the original names, the other names should be searchable Aliases

However, in terms of History he was known first as Afonso Henriques (and other names as per the Wikipedia Link), and only later he would be considered Afonso de Portugal. If my memory does not play tricks on me he died in 1185. So although he was our King since 1139 and recognized by his cousin Alfonso VII, of Castilla, The Pope's being the maximum authority back then, only recognized the Kindom in 1179 meaning that he became Afonso de Portugal, only then.

Really neat and fun too!!

I see through the same daughter “Urraca” laugh

Edit: I can’t even fathom Princess Urraca‘s descendants

That is a really cool chart how can I try it?

I see the Plantagenet name same here, but through Elizabeth (Plantagenet) de Bohun (abt. 1282 - 1316) laugh

In the WikiTree Browser Extension, turn on Surname Summaries under the "Connection Finder Options".

I don’t think that works with an IPad? I love Wikitree apps and tools though but this is one I have yet to try laugh

It's works on my iPad.  However, you may have to reload the Connection Finder page one or more times until the button appears.

So far we all descend from Princess Urraca. I wonder if anybody directly relates to Sancho (Portugal) de Portugal (1154 - 1212) ?

He's my 24th gg.  Apparently his daughter Urraca is my 23rd gg and his son Sancho is my 27th gg...  No direct descent from Sancha though.
by Michel Pilcic G2G6 (9.8k points)

Michel, you are 5th cousin to 3 of my step children. smiley

It's a small world smiley  I'm actually kinda surprised how closely I'm related to pretty much anyone with French-Canadian heritage.

22GGF through Urraca or 24GGF through Sancho.
by John Thompson G2G6 Pilot (354k points)

That’s as close as it gets being the 22nd great grandson. laugh and also through the 2nd King of Portugal is even more interesting!  It seems less descendants are directly related to King Sancho than Princess Urraca.

My wife Kathy's 25GGF through Urraca......seems like we're repeating a tradition.

King Alfonso I "Henriques" of Portugal is my proven 25th Great Grandfather.
In 2019 I was able to prove my lineage to Alfonso I "Henriques" of Portugal with my application to the Military Order of the Crusades through my Spanish Royal Gateway Ancestor Juan Montes Vigil.
Alfonso I "Henriques" of Portugal qualifies one for both the Military Order of the Crusades & Descendants of the Templar Knights (Joined 2020).
My lineage comes from his daughter Urraca, who married King Fernando II of Leon & their child King Alfonso IX of Leon and his daughter Doña Aldonza Alfonso de León who married Pedro Ponce de Cabrera.
They had a son Fernando Pérez Ponce de Léon which my line follows down to Inez de Miranda y Ponce de Léon who married Martín Vásquez de Quirós in the mid 1400's.
Then  to Argüelles until finally arriving at Juan Montes Vigil & his son of the same name in  in 1600.

24th ggf for me and millions of others I suppose…
by Susan Ellen Smith G2G6 Mach 7 (77.0k points)

Millions who exist because of the one link in the chain it’s baffling to imagine how many wouldn’t if he didn’t exist or died young, etc. laugh

Hmmm, and yet that might be a reality since there is a legend that says D. Afonso Henriques was raised in a monastery by monks, as he was born crippled. When he came of age he was sturdy. So some said he was swapped by the monks.

I do not know the origin of the legend, but it could have been some kind of Palacian intrigue, during the dispute with his mother or his cousin, that persisted until today...

Yes, 24th GG through Urraca also. Along with many more Kings, Queens and Royals. Take it as it is, proving line and relationship is sometimes done easily while other times not so.
by Ed Trowbridge G2G3 (3.6k points)
Urraca is the daughter of Afonso (Portugal) de Portugal (1109-1185) [unknown confidence]

This makes Afonso the 25th great grandfather of Carol.

27 degrees

I agree with you, fun but taken with a grain of salt. I would have never considered Portuguese. It could be through his French father.
