Can I not add any profiles unless I add my own living parents first?

I really don't want to add my parents because they are living. I did upload my GEDCOM but it's a massive file and I don't want to go through and accept/reject every single suggestion either (there are close to 1500 of them). I just wanted to add particular segments of my tree/people that are not represented on Wikitree. Is there any way to do that without either starting with myself and therefore adding my parents, or working from this massive GEDCOM file?

It is always better to get a small gedcom to try the gedcom process first.  Most people decide it is easier to just create the process without gedcom since you need to clean up the profiles afterwards.

I added my parents fairly anonymously. Their surnames are there as they obviously came from my grandparents, but there is no forename and no dates.

Have a look too at your privacy settings, you can set there to keep certain (living?) people private.

Hi Annabel,

Yes, it is required because if you do not enter them then you cannot connect up to the single family tree.  However, you can control how much information you enter for them and what privacy levels their profiles have.  See the following pages:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Living_People#Creating_Profiles_for_Living_People

This should help to get you started,

Click on "Add" (at the top right), then "New Person". That will let you add an unrelated person to the tree.

You can add people other than your parents, just click on Add at the top right and click on New Person.  If you don't add your parents then many of the useful features of Wikitree - relationships, connections, DNA connections -  won't be available to you.  The profiles of living people who are not active Wikitreers are always private.  They show up in searches with just a surname and a range of dates to protect their privacy but also to help avoid creation of duplicates.  Here's a link to the Help page for Living People. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Living_People

Thanks everyone, this is very helpful. I thought I had to provide my parents' email addresses. I've been able to add them anonymously so now I can start building up my tree with 20 years of genealogy research, and hopefully it will be helpful for others.
