Ellen Foster was my Great Great Grandmother.  The family story is, she was the child of a Foster Plantation Slave, unnamed, and The white slave owner, supposededly, A Foster.  He took her to the main house to raise as one of his own and had her biological mother play the role of her mammy.  When Ellen was 16 yrs of age she ran off to marry Willam John Smith, Irish, a Mississippi River boater man and gambler.  Supposedly Ellen was disowned by Foster, as the union was frowned upon.  I can't find any clear record of her.  I thought I might find her listed in the Foster records as one of the children.  She was born abt 1832.  She had 3 children with William John Smith, one being my Great Grandmother.   I was thinking possibly Thomas J Foster who bad about 50 slaves.  His first wife died at 19 yrs old in 1877 and he didn't remarry until 1881.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

There were at least 3 Foster Plantations in different states. Which state is the right one for Ellen Foster?

What is your great grandmother's name?
Great grandmothers name was Eliza Smith- Poland. Her mother as Ellen Foster.  Sugar Plantation was in Franklin, St Mary's Parish.
There is a Foster Plantation in Louisiana, one in Mississippi and one in Alabama. Is the Foster Plantation you mentioned in one of these states, which one? If not in one of these states, what state is it in?
I'm thinking Louisianna.

Ellen Foster married William John Smith they had 3 children, Eliza Smith-Poland, born 1832 Louisianna, Foster Plantation, brother William Smith no date, Carrie Smith no date.  Ellen was supposed to be mulatto mother black/ French Creol, Father White Slave Owner, supposedly Foster.  I'm thinking it would have had to be Thomas J Foster, or one of his family.  His first wife died at 19 yrs old ,1877 and he remarried in 1881?  He was supposed to have taken her, Ellen to main house and raised her as his own, with her biological mother acting as her mammy/ nanny.  I am having very little success finding any record of Ellen Fosters early years or records of her other children, William and Carrie.  I believe the stories about her are fairly accurate but no real proof.  Help!!!!!
No Fernaus or children named Nora

Also I am pretty sure Foster Plantation might have been in Franklin, St, Mary's Parish Louisiana

Hi Vickie. I think we are looking for the same ancestor. Just happened to come across this. I believe Ellen foster would be my 3x great grandmother. Although I can't help u out with any facts I do find this very interesting as no one from my family really knows much of the family tree.  Elizabeth Ellen (Smith) Poland is one of the daughters that branches out to my side of the family tree.     Good luck with any info u find!
My ancestors are from Foster Plantation in Foster Alabama.  Ralph Foster is the name of one of them.  We are looking for more info.  We just today did 123 me dna test....So Interesting!
Hi. I was always told the Foster Plantation that we are from is in Adams County Mississippi. My Great Grandfather was Foster Gordon. My Grandmother was Iona Gordon Hickombottom
If do a google search of the following:

Foster Plantation, Adams County, Mississippi

you should find a dozen or more articles of interest

Suellen Skach, I am researching descendants of Fosters in Fosters, Alabama, and am interested in communicating, if you would like to contact me at cavaughn@samford.edu

My ancestors are also associated with Fosters, Alabama.

Thank you but Ellen Foster had no children named Nora.  They were William smith, Carrie ( sp ?) Smith, Eliza smith, later Poland.  Or am I reading this wrong?

Vickie
That was the only thing I came up with at the time and a guess.

Do you have the birth years for William Smith, Carrie Smith and or Eliza Smith? The location would help too if you have it. What state, county and or city were they born in?

I take it that Eliza Smith married someone who had Poland for his surname.
This is a long shot, but I'm doing a family tree and my great great aunt told me she use to work on the Foster Plantation and maybe her family, parents. Can you email me so we can talk about the information? tyiadavis@yahoo.com

hello I am a decedent of a Phillip Foster. I am having trouble finding info on him also. I have come to the conclusion he is a product of the FOSTER family from franklin la. He is supposedly born July 1859. This is in 1900 census.  He died in 1927 in shueston la. Near sunset la. Was told he came from Ireland to new York city  during the potato famine he ended up in Carencro la supposedly with guilbeau family. Not sure this true.  First finding of him is in 1880 census with j.b. Hebert and Marie hebert. He is a boarder and works in field.no record of him in guilbeau family in 1860 or 1870. He married 1884 a Marie Cecile zeringue. After j. b. Hebert dies. He married at break bridge church. List parents as Phillip foster sr. And Marie tarr. Not sure this is him but it could be. I think he is a product of foster family in franklin. 1900 census states his father was born in Ireland not him.he has a stated born in louisiana. Death record says New Orleans la. Need help. Any one has info. He was also married to ida burleigh from grand citrus la married 1897 j o p Opelousas la. I'm stumped.

Isn't that interesting. Also found a mannet foster on freedman bureau who can from Virginia . He was in la. 1867 after emancipation. Could be a foster slave.
