Some trees list a Samuel Foster as the father of a James Foster, born abt 1809, in North Carolina, and died on March 17, 1860, in Lumpkin County, Georgia. But I have NEVER seen documented proof that a Samuel Foster is the father of this particular James Foster. If you have it, I'd like to see the proof.

I have a relative named John Foster(1842-?) who married an Amanda Austin(1855-1915) in NC. Their daughter Ada Foster(1879-1953) is my GGGrandmother. I ran across an 1870 census from Mocksville, NC  that shows Amanda Austin living on what may have been a farm as a domestic servant. She lived with a family of Fosters who were Black. However, there were White Foster's on the same census page, right above the Black Fosters, which I'm assuming means they were in close proximity to each other. Could my John be related to your James?

I don't know of a family tie. The death certificate of Jackson Foster, a son of my earliest Foster, James, (born abt 1809, died March 17, 1860, in Lumpkin County, GA), says that he, Jackson,  was born in Cherokee County, NC. Cherokee County was formed from Macon County in 1839; Macon was formed from Haywood County in 1828; Haywood County was formed from Buncombe County in 1808, and Buncombe County was formed in 1791 from Burke and Rutherford Counties. Clay County was formed from Cherokee County in 1861. I don't know if any of these areas correspond to where your Foster kin might have lived. Do You?

Hi Charles,

Is this the same James Foster who is related to Edmund and Luther Montgomery Foster?  I'm connected to both of those, as well as Gravet E. Foster (Civil War) and Edmund Foster (Revolutionary War).  I have a family history at home somewhere that came when my aunt purchased a family book.  Email me if so.

Thanks for your reply. I see neither Gravet Foster, nor Edmund Foster associated with my James Foster in any of my notes  but that doesn't mean they were not related. The siblings of My James Foster of NC, Habersham, and Lumpkin Counties in Georgia are unknown.

If you get the chance to look in that family book your aunt purchased that may, or may not, shed some light on the mystery.

No relation that I know of.  My James Foster was born and died in Northern Ireland.  Some of his children emigrated to Canada, Midwest US and New England but I know of none in the South.
